274 Aftershocks Detected Following 6.3 Earthquake in Chiang Rai Monday
CHIANG RAI – The Meteorological Department’s Seismological Bureau reported that a total of 274 aftershocks have been detected following the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Chiang Rai on Monday (May 5th).
Chiang Rai’s Phan district endured a second night of aftershocks. Seven of them were in the range of 5.0 and 5.9 and another 21 of them fell between 4.0 to 4.9. Sixty-six aftershocks had a magnitude of 3.0 to 3.9, and another 180 smaller aftershocks measured lower than 3.0 on the Richter scale.
The province’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department (DDPM) also said that around 54,000 residents in seven districts have been affected by the quake. Local civil engineering teams have been sent to inspect buildings and structures in quake-hit districts.
The quake’s epicenter was measured at a depth of 7.4 kilometres underground in Mae Lao district. Vibrations were felt in many northern provinces on Monday evening, such as Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai and Lampang. The tremor was also felt in some tall buildings in Bangkok. -NNT
