CHIANG RAI – The Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT) is proposing a partial reconstruction of Mae Suai Dam after being damaged by a quake in May last year.

A dam safety expert of the EIT, Mr. Suthisak Sornlam has inspected the integrity of the dam along with local community representatives and reconstruction will be concentrated on the damage found at the top of the dam.

Mr. Suthisak has proposed to the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) the reconstruction of the broken structure and reinforcement of the dam base to ensure its integrity.

The dam has been keeping water at 42% of its entire capacity as local residents fear the dam might break with higher water storage.

Anurak Chuchern supervisor of the reservior dam said  “The Dam can withstand a quake with a magnitude of up to seven on the Richter scale.”

Chiang Rai’s Mae Suai Reservior Dam was constructed in 2003 and started storing water in 2014.
