Thai Police Stopping Traffic to Search for Drugs

CHIANG RAI – Police have arrested two men and seized 280,000 methamphetamine pills in Muang district of Chiang Rai province. Officers received a tip that a large amount of illegal drugs would be smuggled from Myanmar into Thailand through Chiang Rai.

Chamnan Ruwdrew, Deputy Commander of Police Region 5, said he subsequently ordered police to keep a close watch on roads from the neighboring country from Friday night.

Early Saturday morning, he said, police spotted a Honda CR-V with a red licence plate from Samut Prakan, running from the border area along a rural road at Ban Fang Min in tambon Rim Kok of Muang district. They signaled the driver to stop for a search.

Police found 280,000 ya ba pills on the car’s back seat.

Arrested were Premtichai Pimavatchara, 26, a resident of Wiang Hae district in Chiang Mai, and a Myanmar national named Igpuk (surname unknown), 21.

The suspects told police that they had been paid 100,000 baht each to deliver the illegal drugs from Myanmar to a client in Nonthaburi province by a married couple, who were leading the way in another car and managed to escape.

Police were hunting for the couple.
