26-Year-old Woman Busted For Shipping Crystal Meth in Sofas

Narcotics Control Board secretary-general Wichai Chaimongkol has told a press briefing a 26-year-old woman has been arrested for trying to ship 210 kilograms of crystal meth in a shipment of sofa beds destined for Malaysia.

Seaport authorities detained Ms. Supawaddee Iem-urai, 26 after 210 packages labeled tea were found hidden in 19 sofas destined for Malaysia. Each package contained one kilogram of crystal meth.

The sofa beds packaged in wooden crates were seized at Klong Toey Port in Khlong Toei District of Bangkok.

Mr. Wichai said told the press briefing authorities were tipped off that someone planned to ship drugs hidden in sofas to Malaysia, using a private logistics firm.

During questioning, Ms. Supawadee allegedly admitted she was paid to smuggle the crystal meth in the sofas to Malaysia.

The NCB secretary-general also said crystal meth was the drug of choice for smugglers to ship in international parcels. Furthermore, the drug smugglers also concealed crystal meth in auto parts, air conditioners, and other consumer goods.

Since the beginning of this year, border and port authorities had seized a variety of drugs in 68 cases. The drugs were destined for 13 countries.

Previous drug seizures included 204.14kilograms of crystal meth; 21.6 kilograms of heroin; 10.02kilograms of marijuana; 515 kilograms of ketamine; 730 grams of cocaine; 990 ecstasy pills, and also 6,040 meth pills in sofa sleepers, authorities said.
