How Big is eSports in Thailand?

With millions of keen gamers, Thailand has a strong gaming culture but how does that translate into eSports success?

This is a fast-growing sport that has been warmly welcomed in many different countries. Thai gamers have the chance to make their mark in a growing number of competitions.

The IESF World eSports Championships

South Korea is widely regarded as being the top country in competitive gaming, followed by countries like China and the US. However, the speed at which the industry is growing and the number of opportunities it presents mean that this may change in the near future.

At the time of writing, a team from Thailand is taking part in the 14th IESF World eSports Championship. Held in Bali, Indonesia, it’s one of the biggest meetings of this type on the planet with over 100 teams from different countries taking part.

Each of the games that they play will have its own winner, and the $100,000 prize pool will be divided between the top three teams in each case.

The games cover all of the most popular eSports titles, such as Dota 2, where the Thailand team have performed well to be counted among the favorites to win the title.

CS:GO, Tekken 7, and PUBG Mobile are among the other top games, with Thailand making it to the semi-final stage in Tekken.

eFootball 2023 is the game that had the most participants in this contest, although the Thai team failed to reach the later stages of this game.

The Rise of Gaming in Thailand to Continue

There are several factors that help to show us how gaming and eSports should continue to grow in Thailand in the future.

One of them is the rising internet penetration rate, which was sitting at just over 78% at the start of 2022.

With more people going online than ever before, the number of competitive gamers should also keep on rising in line with this trend.

We can also consider how the global gaming market is expected to carry on expanding. Some estimates suggest the revenue earned from gaming could rise by up to 50% in the next five years or so.

Thai gamers look unlikely to be left behind when this happens, with Coin Master, Garena Free Fire, and eFootball 2023 among the most popular games in the country according to the latest research.

The rise of casino games across the planet has also been reflected in the Thai market, where Dragon Tiger, roulette, and diversely themed slots are among the most popular games to bet on.

We can see the size of this market with the fact that this online casino software website reveals their list of more than 9,000 different games from over 100 providers.

With over 150,000 unique players using this software each month, it’s a market that’s set to grow further.

The signs suggest that eSports will be even more important in the future in Thailand, as part of the sector’s overall growth. With gaming in general to carry on getting bigger and more influential, expect to see more about eSports from now on.
