(CTN News) – As of 2024, Netflix continues to be a treasure trove of cinematic gems, offering various movies that cater to various tastes and preferences. Here’s a curated list of the 5 best movies on Netflix, spanning different genres and styles:
The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been available on Netflix for over a month, but it has managed to reclaim its position as one of the service’s most popular films. Perhaps even more astonishing is that the critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful independent drama The Nest has risen to the number four spot on Netflix’s list.
The superb performances of Jude Law and Carrie Coon, who star in The Nest, are responsible for that outcome. Also, this week on Netflix, The Legend of Tarzan has made quite a stir, demonstrating that legendary pulp characters still have a chance at success. On the other hand, The Equaliser 3 and The Society of the Snow show that they are highly popular among Netflix members and are hovering around the top ten.
To start the year off right, that lineup is still solid. Can you handle all the fresh content on Netflix? Here are the 5 best movies on Netflix right now in 2024:
CTN Pick
1. The Legend of Tarzan (2016)
PLOT: It would likely take a lot to convince Margot Robbie to return for a supporting part similar to her one in The Legend of Tarzan, given the success of Barbie. With Alexander Skarsgård of The Northman starring as the iconic pulp hero Tarzan and Robbie as Jane, this action-adventure picture from 2016 is superbly cast. John Clayton III is the name Tarzan now uses in London, where he and his wife have settled after leaving the jungle.
But when an American man called George Washington Williams (Samuel L. Jackson) begs Tarzan to reveal the slave trade in Belgium from his house, Tarzan feels he must return. Tarzan is unaware that Chief Mbonga, played by Djimon Hounsou, has a grudge against the King of the Jungle and is plotting to kidnap Captain Léon Rom, played by Christoph Waltz, the ambassador of Belgium.
2. The Nest (2020)
PLOT: The Nest answers the often-asked but seldom-spoken question, “What happens if you never make it?” and the expression “fake it until you make it” comes to mind while watching the show. It would appear that Rory O’Hara’s (Jude Law) lofty goals and ambitions are just beyond his reach. Rory returns to his home in England with his family after persuading Allison O’Hara (Carrie Coon) to support his schemes.
Even though the O’Haras get to reside in an estate, Rory lives in fantasy land, and the family’s financial situation is abysmal. As things in Allison and Rory’s marriage begin to fall apart, Rory tries another business transaction that could be his undoing or rescue.
3. Trapped (2002)
PLOT: At the beginning of Trapped, we see what appears to be a flawless crime: Courtney Love’s Cheryl holds Dr Will Jennings (Stuart Townsend) at gunpoint in her hotel room, while Kevin Bacon’s Joe kidnaps Will’s daughter Abigail (Dakota Fanning), and Charlize Theron’s Karen Jennings (who is both Will’s wife and Abby’s mother) is held at bay.
The kidnappers want to pay ransom to get Abigail back to her parents, but they fail to consider that she has severe asthma and won’t be able to function without her inhaler for very long. Because Karen is determined to regain her daughter, Joe fails to account for her strength. Suddenly, the abduction has become a power struggle, and Karen is prepared to sacrifice everything to protect Abigail.
4. The Florida Project (2017)
PLOT: Though it stays in the shadow of Walt Disney World the entire time, The Florida Project is as far off from Disney films as it gets. Billy Hicks, played by Willem Dafoe of “Poor Things,” is the manager of a cheap hotel that caters to tourists visiting Disney theme parks. The mother of a six-year-old daughter named Moonee, Halley (Bria Vinaite), and Bobby’s long-term resident, Brooklynn Kimberly Prince, are both dealing with financial difficulties.
As Halley puts her child in danger and turns to sex work as a means of survival, Bobby, who genuinely worries about Moonee, is quickly losing patience with her. Even at the so-called “happiest place on Earth,” not everyone will find happiness. You will remember this story for a long time.
5. Society of the Snow (2023)
PLOT: J. A. Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), a Spanish thriller director, may be Netflix’s next Oscar contender with Society of the Snow. Although this isn’t the first film to focus on the survivors of a plane accident in Uruguay in 1972, the 1993 American picture Alive was the most prominent.
Nonetheless, Bayona’s film takes authenticity much more seriously than its predecessors, using the real survivors’ stories and filming at the crash site. The fact that most actors are rookies adds to the film’s strength: it keeps viewers guessing who will make it and what lengths they will go to stay alive.
