CHIANG RAI – Representatives of the public and private sectors in four upper northern provinces took a boat tour yesterday along the Mekong River to explore the possibility of tourism in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
Led by Vice Governor of Chiang Rai Boonwet Sripuangjai took a 120-kilometer cruise from Chiang Saen district of Chiang Rai to Kenglap Township in Myanmar to survey a potential itinerary.
Mr. Boonwet said the Mekong River and the towns flanking it were ideal destinations for tourists during the winter. The charms of the Greater Mekong Subregion lie in the traditional lifestyle of local people, the natural scenery on both sides of the river and the picturesque morning mist.
Vice governor of Boonwet added that tourism-related agencies were mulling over a plan to promote tours covering Thailand, Myanmar and Laos and possibly southern China in the future.
