Horses racing

Horses put in a lot of hard work before attending race events and require specialist training so they can compete to the highest standard. Horses need to be well-conditioned and prepared to take on such an event and making sure they don’t become overworked is essential.

There are many stages to preparing a horse for a race, such as making sure they are in peak physical condition, that they’re getting the correct balance of nutrients and that they have suitable protection when in transit such as a cooler or stable rug, as well as a head and tail guard. Read on for more information on how horses prepare for race events.

Physical Condition

Just like a human, horses require training to prepare for races. Making sure that a horse is trained correctly means that it will be superior in strength and endurance and can develop high-quality jumping skills. Training a horse with various exercise regimes means that you’ll be able to see a difference in their all-over body tone and muscular development.

There are a couple of factors that need to be worked on to achieve physical fitness in a horse such as speed and endurance. By training a horse in these areas as well as exercising its physical form, horses can become stronger and ready to race.

Weight and diet

Another aspect of getting a horse ready for a race event is ensuring proper food intake and maintaining a good diet. Making sure that your horse is eating properly, with an adequate protein intake will help to keep the horse in peak condition throughout their training period and leading up to their race.

Keeping track of how much your horse weighs, so that it is not too much or too little is important, underweight means that it could be overtrained and fatigued, and an overweight horse may not perform as well as it should.

Thankfully, when preparing for a race event, there are feeds available that are balanced and formulated to meet the needs of a racing horse, ensuring they are getting the correct nutrients with ease.

Endurance

Your horse needs to have the endurance to finish a race and therefore it needs to be trained to maximise its endurance. You should introduce aerobic exercises alongside your horse’s easier workouts.

Endurance workouts tend to be more intense, as it means working harder and faster – both attributes a horse needs to race! Training for endurance works on getting the horse ready for the race itself. You can add these exercises to your horse’s routine by setting a distance for your horse and slowly increasing their speed over the ground they are covering.

Comfortable transport

Once the hard work is done, the only thing left to think about is how you’re going to transport your horse to the race. You should prepare for this by making sure your horse has the correct equipment to protect them on their travels, such as a head collar to stop the horse’s head from being injured as well as tail guards and bandages to prevent rubbing.

There is a range of rugs available to keep your horse from becoming too hot or cold on the journey, as well as help them look the part.
