CHIANG RAI – Governor Pongsak Wangsamer has met with the Governor of Tachileik province of Myanmar to strengthen bilateral relations while reassuring the latter that Thailand remains open to Myanmar workers.

Upon arrival in Tachileik, just across the border from Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district, Mr Pongsak and his entourage were greeted by Mr U Tin Win, the newly-appointed Governor of Tachileik. The Chiang Rai Governor congratulated his Myanmar counterpart on his new duty and expressed Thailand’s commitment to further cooperation with the neighboring country.

Mr U Tin Win, on this occasion, inquired Mr Pongsak about the progress of the request to have the closing time of the Mae Sai border crossing extended from 6.30 pm to 9 pm every day. The Chiang Rai Governor informed the official that the matter had already been proposed to responsible agencies and approval could be expected soon.

The Myanmar side also asked Thailand to take many other issues into consideration, one of which was the permission of Myanmar nationals with border passes to travel as far as Mueang district of Chiang Rai, as opposed to the current limit of 5 kilometers from the border. The Thai officials were also urged to ensure proper treatment of Myanmar workers within the Kingdom.

In response, Mr Pongsak insisted that there had been no attempts to drive away Myanmar citizens, confirming that everyone from the other side of the border was still entitled to employment in Thailand within the legal framework. – See more at: http://thainews.prd.go.th/centerweb/newsen/NewsDetail?NT01_NewsID=WNSOC5706230010018#sthash.hcYd6ymb.dpuf
