UK Faces Coldest November Night Since 2010: Snow and Ice Warnings Persist
(CTN News) – There will be three more days of snow and ice warnings after this November night, which was the coldest for many parts of the UK since 2010.
A bitter-8C (18F) was the temperature on Aonach Mor in the Scottish Highlands.
Temperatures dipped to a frigid -6.1C (21F) in the Cumbrian town of Keswick and a chilling -5.5C (22F) in lower-lying Prestwick, Ayrshire, overnight.
Across eastern England and Scotland, snow has fallen to Norfolk in the south. For a few more days, it will remain chilly.
Parts of the Midlands, northwest England, and Northern Ireland are experiencing dangerous traffic conditions due to freezing fog, which might also happen elsewhere.
The eastern half of the United Kingdom and northern and eastern Scotland might anticipate heavier snowfall later on. Even in southwest England, there’s a potential that some could fall overnight on the moors.
A light dusting of snow and rain has soaked the soil in Northern Ireland. Icy roads and pavements are the result of a combination of freezing fog and precipitation. The north of Wales has experienced sleet.
Currently, frigid air is being sent from Scandinavia, where November weather is almost record-low.
Among the coolest spots overnight were:
- Bridgefoot, in Cumbria -7.2C (19F)
- Tyndrum in Crianlarich -5.8C (22F)
- Hawarden in Flintshire -3 (27F)
- Aldergrove, County Antrim -2.9C (27F)
In the event of snow or ice, the Met Office has issued a weather warning for portions of Yorkshire, north-east England, and northern and eastern Scotland beginning at 17:00 GMT on Wednesday.
On Thursday, a second set will be in effect for most of the day across southwest England and eastern Scotland, north-east England, and North Yorkshire. According to weather forecasts, Thursday could bring ice to parts of Northern Ireland.
Most of the UK’s eastern coast is now under a snow and ice warning that will last until Friday morning.
People should be prepared to encounter dangerous situations, such as icy spots on roads and pavements, disruption and delays on railways, and yellow graded warnings for these things.
Due to impending road closures, drivers are being urged to use extreme caution. Both the A169 near Goathland, North York Moors, and the A1671 between Whitby and Pickering have been closed since last night.
As temperatures are predicted to dip below freezing overnight, Sadiq Khan, the capital’s emergency chief, launched a “severe weather emergency protocol” for London to ensure the safety of those sleeping rough.
The upshot is that all municipalities must make more room for the homeless.
On a separate note, “significant impacts are probable,” according to the UK Health Security Agency’s amber cold-health notice for the health sector in northern regions of England.
Cold weather is expected to impact the entire health service, putting the entire population at risk, according to the agency, which is why the amber alert has been issued.
Midlands residents should be aware of a milder yellow cold health warning. Both warnings will remain in effect until Tuesday at 18:00 GMT on December 5th.
The agency’s Dr. Agostinho Sousa emphasized the need to keep an eye on the elderly and the sick, and he suggested that they keep the heat on in their bedrooms and living rooms, as these areas get the most use.
