Champions League Returns To Manchester United After Chelsea's Loss

(CTN News) Manchester United will return to Champions League action after thumping Chelsea 4-1 on Thursday to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.

In their final two league games, United had to earn a point from both matches to ensure a spot in Europe’s premier club competition for the first time in their history.

Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes (penalty) and Marcus Rashford scored for the Red Devils, who needed to keep their hopes of qualifying alive for the Europa League alive.

The Champions League is a very important competition for this club and it belongs there,” manager Erik ten Hag told Sky Sports. According to ten Hag, “it is not easy to achieve this in the Premier League. It is a very tough competition, so to achieve this is an excellent achievement.”

Despite failing to qualify for the Champions League last season, three-time European Champions Manchester United are in third place with 72 points with one game left to play. They are six points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool.

Following a goalless draw against Leicester City on Monday, Newcastle secured a spot in the elite of the European league after finishing fourth in the table. With 43 points, Chelsea are 12th in the table, a far cry from their stellar start to the season.

In the final match of the Premier League season, United will battle 10th-placed Fulham on Sunday. The Red Devils won the Carabao Cup in February and will be looking to complete a domestic double when they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on June 3.

In Fernandes’ words, “[the season has been] decent, it is not perfect because we want more,” he said. In regard to what we achieved this season, I believe it was a great season. We won one trophy, we got to the top four, and that was our goal after we saw that we wouldn’t be able to compete for the Premier Champions League title.”

The next step is to finish the Champions League well and win the FA Cup.”

Starting from the opening weekend of the season, Ten Hag’s team is unbeaten at Old Trafford in Premier League play.

Fernandes said the home supporters understand how important they are to him. Our appreciation goes out to all the players for their effort throughout the season, which was evident in many games.

Casemiro scored a close-range header off a long free kick in the sixth minute. His no-look chip into the path of Jadon Sancho just before half-time set up Martial’s goal. It was Martial who slotted the ball into the empty net.

As the game neared its end, Frank Lampard’s Chelsea collapsed. It was 3-0 when Rashford scored the 30th goal of the season in all competitions in the 73rd minute, cutting the ball round Kepa Arrizabalaga to make it 4-0.

Despite clinching a spot in the top four, Ten Hag will be concerned about the injuries to winger Antony and Luke Shaw ahead of United’s match against Man City. Those two players are already out for the Red Devils.

With Chelsea set to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League for the first time since 1995-96, Joao Felix pulled one back for the visitors in the 89th minute.
