(CTN News) – Another Tim Burton role for Jenna Ortega. Variety reports the actor has been cast in Beetlejuice 2, marking the second time he has worked with the filmmaker.
Warner Bros. has announced that Beetlejuice 2 is set to be released on September 6, 2024, nearly a quarter century after its 1986 predecessor – which starred Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Alec Baldwin alongside Geena Davis – and it was released back in 1988.
Although it is still unclear exactly what the follow-up to Beetlejuice will entail, we do know that Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder are set to reprise their roles as the mischievous “bio-exorcist” Beetlejuice and the goth Lydia Deetz.
As Lydia Deetz’s daughter, Jenna Ortega will join the two famed actors, a role that seems apt given her beloved portrayal of the sardonic Addams family member she portrayed on the show.
From as far back as 1990, there has been a possibility of a Beetlejuice sequel, and this has been talked about for many years. In 2016, Tim Burton was the last to share an update on the potential continuation of the film.
Burton said at the time that he would really like to do it in the right circumstances, but that it is one of those movies that needs to be done exactly right for it to work: it’s one of those films.
There is nothing cries out for a sequel to this movie… it’s one of those things that if all the elements come together, it’s going to be an amazing movie.
I love the character and Michael’s amazing as that character, so yeah, we’ll see.” Looks like the stars have finally aligned.
There were rumors that Ortega would be joining the cast of the sequel ever since March, but it only took until now to make her casting official. Aside from Theroux, American actor and filmmaker Justin Theroux has also been cast in the film, however the details of his role are still unknown at this time.
It would be a mistake to think Ortega and Burton would be the only two people who would connect Beetlejuice 2 and Netflix’s Wednesday worlds.
In addition to Alfred Gough and Miles Millar who also worked with Burton on Wednesday as co-creators, writers, and executive producers, they have also been tapped by Burton to write the screenplay for Beetlejuice 2.
In addition, in season one of Wednesday, there was already an easter egg honoring Beetlejuice that was an easter egg for the show.
Variety reports that the production for Beetlejuice 2 is scheduled to begin on May 10, 2023 in London. There is even a chance that Brad Pitt’s Plan B company will produce the film, adding to its list of star-studded names.
