CHIANG RAI – Police have arrested a 34-year-old man after discovering a massive drug haul in his vehicle. Officers at the Pu Kaeng Checkpoint in Phan Chiang Rai stopped a suspicious black SUV on Sunday morning.
A thorough search revealed 300,000 methamphetamine pills hidden cleverly throughout the car. The driver is now in custody as police investigate the wider drug network.
The incident took place along the busy Phahon Yothin Road in the Mae Yen subdistrict of Phan District. Police flagged down the Isuzu MU-X because the driver was acting suspiciously. Officers quickly realized this was not a routine traffic stop when they found the illegal drugs. The total weight of the seized narcotics came to around 40 kilograms.
Key Takeaways
- Police in Chiang Rai seized 300,000 methamphetamine pills weighing 40 kilograms from a black Isuzu MU-X.
- Officers discovered the drugs cleverly hidden in three different compartments within the vehicle.
- A 34-year-old male driver was arrested and is facing serious drug distribution charges.
The Traffic Stop at Pu Kaeng Checkpoint
The bust occurred on October 4, 2026, at around 11:00 AM. A team of local officers managed the checkpoint under the command of Police Lieutenant Colonel Suraphas Thammapanya. He worked closely with Police Captain Noppadol Saengkham, who led the first operations team on duty that day. They routinely monitor this highway for illegal activities and smuggling attempts.
When the black Isuzu MU-X approached the checkpoint, the officers immediately noticed something was off. The driver showed signs of nervousness, which prompted the police to ask him to pull over. This sharp observation by the checkpoint team ultimately led to the massive discovery. The Chiang Rai police then began a full, systematic search of the vehicle.
Where the Drugs Were Hidden
The smugglers tried hard to conceal the massive load of illegal drugs. However, the search team found the carefully wrapped packages stuffed into three distinct areas of the SUV. First, officers located a stash wedged tightly in the gap under the front hood. Next, they found more drugs hidden in the footwell of the third-row seats, covered by folded chairs.
Finally, the remaining packages were squeezed into an empty space beneath the third-row armrest. Once the officers unpacked the bundles, they counted roughly 300,000 methamphetamine pills, widely known as yaba. The haul consisted of roughly 297,000 orange pills and 3,000 green ones. These colored pills are a common trademark of regional drug syndicates operating across the borders.
Next Steps in the Investigation
Following the discovery, authorities immediately seized the black SUV used for the transport. They also confiscated the suspect’s mobile phone and 8,300 baht in cash as evidence. The 34-year-old driver now faces severe legal consequences for his actions. Officers charged him with illegal possession of a Category 1 drug with the clear intent to sell.
The suspect and the seized items were handed over to investigators at the Phan District Police Station. Meanwhile, officials have notified state prosecutors and local administrative authorities as required by Thai law. Detectives are now working hard to track down the masterminds behind this shipment. They hope to identify both the source of the drugs and their final destination.
