The Patrick Mahomes Decision Cursed in Chicago and Celebrated in Kansas

The Patrick Mahomes Decision Cursed in Chicago and Celebrated in Kansas – On February 12, the Kansas City Chiefs will stride out onto a Super Bowl field once again. For Andy Reid’s side, this will be a third appearance in American football’s grandest spectacle over the course of a four-year period.

A dynasty of sorts has been forged at Arrowhead Stadium, with more major silverware required to cement that status.

It would come as no surprise if the Vince Lombardi Trophy were to be packed up with collective belongings when the Chiefs prepare to head back west from what they hope will be a memorable trip to Arizona.

The Chiefs got their hands on the ultimate prize back in 2020, when overcoming the San Francisco 49ers, and are priced at +100 in NFL Super Bowl odds to repeat that trick some three years on. The Philadelphia Eagles stand in their way on this occasion, but confidence is running high.

That is because Reid has enough potential match-winners at his disposal to defeat any rival, with a brains trust that consists of experienced coaches and proven on-field performers boasting the kind of know-how that can find the solution to any puzzle.

Very much front and center in that group is superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Already a Super Bowl-winning MVP, one of the best in the business has his sights locked on a second ring.

In the wake of Tom Brady’s latest retirement, a suitable successor to the NFL’s QB throne is required. Patrick Mahomes may have some way to go before he can claim to have secured GOAT status, but he is very much heading down a road that will one day lead to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Fate would appear to have set him on that path, with the sporting gods smiling on Kansas back in 2017. The NFL Draft that year saw Patrick Mahomes fall into the Chiefs’ lap, who got hold of his undoubted potential.

Things were not initially supposed to play out like that, with Patrick Mahomes Sr revealing that his son had been earmarked for the third pick by the Bears of Chicago.

He has said: “They told him they were going to draft him. We thought he was going to be the third pick overall and go to Chicago. He had a great meeting when he went there and liked all the guys that were doing the stuff there and thought he was going to be a Bear.”

A change of heart eventually led to the Bears taking Mitchell Trubisky, with that experiment lasting four largely forgettable seasons before a parting of ways was considered to be the best option for all concerned.

In contrast, the Chiefs have seen Mahomes re-write the history books during the same era.

That sliding doors moment will continue to eat away at some in Chicago, with it impossible to ignore what they passed up, but their loss was very much Kansas City’s gain and it is they who will be heading to the last dance again in 2023 while another strong breeze of change sweeps through the Windy City in Illinois.
