Medvedev Stuns Zverev in a Five-Set Victory at The Australian Open

(CTN News) – The Australian Open 2024 semifinal was won by Daniil Medvedev over Alexander Zverev 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-3 at Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, on Friday.

A final match between Medvedev and Jannik Sinner will be played on January 28 in which Medvedev will attempt to win his first Australian Open and second Grand Slam in his career.

As the Russian came back from two sets to zero to reach the final of his sixth Grand Slam and third Australian Open, he was able to demonstrate his incredible mental strength.

His second comeback in the tournament has come from a two-set deficit. It was the Russian’s third five-setter at this year’s slam, and he will now face Sener, who defeated Novak Djokovic in the first semi-final.

Although Sinner leads the head-to-head series 6-3, Medvedev has won the last three meetings between the two players.

As the world number four, Sinner became the first tennis player in six years to defeat Djokovic at Melbourne Park, and he has only lost one set so far in this season.

In an interview following the match, Medvedev was asked what changes he made when he was two sets down, to which he replied that he instructed himself to play aggressively.

According to Medvedev, he became physically tired during the third set. It didn’t seem like he noticed. According to him, he was unable to run 40 rallies as long as in the first set.

Therefore, I decided to go with a more aggressive approach. In case it does not work out, I tried. I tried what I thought would be effective. It has begun to work. As a result, I began serving much better. It was an unbelievable tiebreak. A little bit of luck on the five all returns. But that is the nature of tennis.”
