(CTN News) – China has recruited 1.48 million full-time teachers over the past ten years, bringing the total number to 10.57 million, according to statistics released Tuesday by the Ministry of Education.
As of now, there are 158 million students enrolled in China’s nine-year compulsory education system at 207,000 schools.
In 2012, the compulsory-education retention rate was 91.8%. In 2013, it was 95.4%. Free tuition is provided throughout China’s nine-year compulsory education.
Lyu Yugang, an official with the ministry, said at a press conference that China’s compulsory education has achieved balanced development at the county level based on full coverage between 2012 and 2021.
According to Lyu, all students who dropped out due to financial reasons were identified and helped return to school as soon as possible.
Additionally, the country has focused on equal education rights for children with disabilities.
A total of 920,000 students studied in special education institutions in 2021, an increase of 142.8% over ten years earlier.
A nutrition improvement program for rural students helped 37 million children each year pass their physical health tests, increasing from 70.3% in 2012 to 86.7% last year.
During the past decade, all levels of government have invested more than 1 trillion yuan (more than 149 billion dollars) into closing the gap between urban and rural school conditions.
