Cubby House

A cubby house, also known as a cubby-hole or a cubby, is a small playhouse or area for children. These spaces can sometimes be constructed by the children themselves like fort-houses, making a small part of the basement their own etc., or it could be a constructed cubby hole. Cubby houses can be for children between the age of 10 months to 10 years. Cubby houses can be a great way of being outdoors and engaging with new people instead of children being on their gadgets the whole time.

Parents struggle with this digital obsession in their kids and can only wish that their kids could go outside, or at least to their backyards, to get a breath of fresh air and socialize with other kids. Investing in a cubby house has a chance of making that digital obsession decrease. Not only does it encourage imagination and creativity, but children will also love the idea of having their own space and looking after, according to their preferences. This is a great way to make friends, as well.

Steps to building a cubby:

1. Mark the site

This place is where your children will be spending the most time; picking a shady spot will be better because as the cubby is not that protected, the cubby can get hot in the summers and choose a place with more space for playing outside, as well. Cubby houses come in a range of sizes, and most occupy more space upwards. The lines should be of equal length, the vertical ones of size and the horizontal ones of a size. You can set the cubby area as such and join them with a string line tied to pegs.

There are ready-made cubby houses online or in the market, with different prince ranges. But, if you wish to make your cubby hole, then you can follow specific steps to construct one for your child. For different age groups, there are various types of cubby houses to choose from, like ground or cottage for toddlers and elevated ones with stairs or slides for the older kids.

2. Floor form, wall and roof frames

The foundation is the critical stage of construction, so make sure that you double-check the measurements. The most common type of wood used for cubby houses is fir and cedar. After completing the sheet flooring, the wall frame has to be hoisted up and made a sidewall frame in the same way and fix it into position, and the rafters can be arranged into position to make the roof with the correct measurements.

3. Raise the roof

For this step, you will need the help of someone. While one keeps the rafter roof in position, the other can skew the nail on each side, one to the rafter cut and the other into the plate block. The same has to be repeated on the other side of the roof. A nail can be skewed at every third corrugation.

4. Complete structure

With wall frames and the roof done, the door and the window frames have to be fitted in, and the exterior wall lining materials, including weatherboard, cement sheet, building boards etc., also have to be included.

Final touches

Adding the door and the window frames mean that you are at the end. Check for operation, and if any adjustments are necessary, they can be added at this stage. For windows, you can add Perspex instead of using glass or using silicone for sealing. You can add a protective coat of paint and customize it as you wish.

Be it an elevated or a cottage cubby house; you can decorate the cubby house as per your child’s preferences. You can ask the help of an engineer in its construction, or you can check the numerous Youtube videos on how you can construct cubby houses. Cubby houses will prove to be a great addition to your backyard and will keep your kids engaged. Cubby houses are for your child to be happy and have fun, but more importantly, it has to be safe.
