Police Catch Couple Smuggling 200,000 Meth Pills From Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI – In a major blow to illegal drug networks in Thailand, police officers have arrested a husband and wife caught smuggling a massive load of illegal drugs. The couple was transporting 200,000 methamphetamine pills, commonly known as yaba, hidden inside their car and a rented house.

According to a recent report from Khaosod, the suspects confessed that they were taking orders from a hidden drug kingpin they simply called the “Boss.” The couple planned to move the drugs from the northern province of Chiang Rai all the way down to Bangkok. However, their dangerous road trip came to a sudden end when police intercepted them on the highway.

The sting operation began on the busy Asian Highway (Route 32) in the Maha Rat district of Ayutthaya province. Officers from the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) and the Highway Police teamed up to track the suspects. They were acting on a hot tip that the couple was driving a black Daihatsu car filled with illegal drugs.

When the police spotted the target vehicle, they quickly signaled the driver to pull over. The officers then started a very careful search of the car. At first glance, everything looked normal. But when the police removed the door panels on both sides of the back seat, they found the hidden stash.

Inside the empty spaces of the car doors, the smugglers had packed 100,000 meth pills tightly into neat bundles. The police immediately handcuffed the suspects, identified as 48-year-old Somchai and his 50-year-old wife, Chanakan.

The arrest on the highway was only the first part of the story. During police questioning, Somchai admitted that they had more drugs hidden away. He told the officers about a rented house in the Sop Prap district of Lampang province, in northern Thailand.

Not wanting to lose any time, the police drove Somchai across several provinces to point out the exact location of the stash house. When they searched the bedroom of the rented home, the officers found a backpack resting on the floor. Inside that bag was another batch of 100,000 meth pills.

The couple explained their whole process to the police. They said they would travel around Chiang Rai to pick up the drugs from different secret meeting spots. After gathering enough pills, they brought them back to their rented home in Lampang. There, they carefully packed the drugs and hid them inside their car. They would then wait for a phone call from the “Boss” telling them to drive down to Bangkok to deliver the pills to local street dealers.

This huge arrest did not happen by accident. It was the direct result of good detective work following an earlier drug bust.

On May 6, police arrested a different group of drug smugglers in the southern province of Surat Thani. In that case, the police caught a large trailer truck carrying nearly 300,000 meth pills. Following that success, the police commander ordered his team to dig deeper and find the people who supplied that truck.

By checking security cameras and following the money, the police spotted Somchai and Chanakan. The camera footage showed the couple dropping off drugs to the truck drivers in Bangkok right before that truck drove south to Surat Thani. From that moment on, the police knew exactly who they were looking for, leading to this week’s successful highway stop.
