According to his wife, Onchuma, the conflict began when Sikkharin parked his vehicle in an area heavily claimed by a group of rival, illegal “black-plate” taxi drivers. In Thailand, black license plates indicate private vehicles, which are not legally allowed to operate as commercial transport.
Despite a local mediator stepping in earlier to resolve the tension, the peace did not last. On the day of the attack, Sikkharin was severely beaten and then shot dead in cold blood. The violence of the crime shocked the island, but what followed was even more disturbing for the grieving family.
Following the murder, Sikkharin’s family faced a new nightmare. Instead of being able to mourn in peace, they began receiving threatening messages. - Delaying Religious Rites: The family has sadly been forced to delay collecting Sikkharin’s body for traditional funeral rites, prioritizing their immediate physical safety over their mourning process.
According to a report from the Bangkok Post, residents who witnessed the events are also too frightened to speak to the press. The perceived power of the suspects has created a heavy wall of silence on the island.
The Police Investigation Unfolds
Initially, local police told the family that the security camera footage in the area was too blurry to properly identify the attackers. However, Ms. Onchuma refused to give up. She managed to find clear, high-quality video footage recorded by a foreign tourist who happened to be at the scene during the attack.
