CHIANG RAI, THAILAND — Local authorities in northern Thailand have successfully stopped a suspected motorcycle smuggling operation along the busy borders of the Mekong River. The Royal Thai Navy‘s Mekong Riverine Unit (MRU) in the Chiang Rai zone arrested a Chinese man and seized three motorcycles during a late-night patrol.
This event highlights the ongoing challenges of border security and the dedication of local officers in keeping the region safe.
The successful arrest took place following direct orders from Captain Pakorn Maniam, the Commander of the MRU in the Chiang Rai zone. He directed Commander Worawit Nopkao, the Head of the Chiang Saen Naval Station, to organize a special intelligence and patrol team. Their mission was to closely monitor high-risk areas along the river border.
Around 8:00 PM, the patrol team was searching the riverbank near Ban San Ton Pao, a small village in the Mae Ngoen sub-district of Chiang Saen. Because it was dark, the officers had to be extra careful. During their watch, they spotted suspicious movement near the water.
When the officers moved in to inspect the area, they found a man who appeared to be a Chinese national. Evidence suggested he had just crossed the river into Thailand illegally.

Following the arrest, the naval officers officially charged the Chinese man. The primary charge is “entering the kingdom without permission,” which is a direct violation of the Immigration Act of 1979. After explaining the charges, the MRU officers handed the suspect and the three seized motorcycles over to local police investigators.
The police will now take over the case. They will process the suspect through the legal system and conduct further investigations to find the missing drivers and any larger criminal groups connected to this smuggling attempt. The Navy has promised to keep patrols strict and continuous to ensure the safety and security of the Chiang Rai border.
