LOEI, Thailand – The festive atmosphere of the Songkran holiday turned into a nightmare for several families in Loei province after a horrific road accident claimed the lives of four young students. A pickup truck reportedly crossed into the opposite lane, striking the motorcycle carrying the boys as they were returning from holiday celebrations.
The incident occurred on the Loei-Chiang Khan road near Ban Na Bon. Four boys, aged between 13 and 16, were traveling on a single motorcycle after spending the day playing in the water at the popular tourist destination of Chiang Khan.
The victims were identified as 13-year-old Chuanakorn, 14-year-olds Pongpipat and Pattarapong, and 16-year-old Kittikhun, who was the driver of the motorcycle.
The boys were well-known in their community as students and former football players for the Mahathai Suksa Tha Bom School. Friends and teachers have described them as active, bright young men with promising futures.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to Thairath’s report, the accident happened when a pickup truck, driven by a 28-year-old man identified as Mr. Wuttichai, veered out of its lane and collided head-on with the boys’ motorcycle.
The force of the impact was devastating. All four teenagers were killed, leaving their families and the local community in a state of shock and profound sadness.
The driver of the pickup truck sustained a head injury and is currently receiving treatment at Chiang Khan Hospital. Reporters at the scene noted that Mr. Wuttichai appeared dazed and was unable to provide a coherent statement to investigators.
His mother and aunt remain by his side as he recovers.
Police are waiting for the suspect to be medically cleared before proceeding with formal questioning. Initial observations from witnesses and authorities suggest that impaired driving may have been a factor, though official blood alcohol tests are pending.
Families Demand Justice
The grief at the victims’ homes is palpable. The families, who are members of the local Christian community, have brought the bodies home for religious rites.
In emotional interviews, the parents expressed not only their heartbreak but also a fierce demand for accountability.
