CHIANG RAI — A traditional Thai New Year ceremony turned into a scene of chaos Thursday morning when a massive swarm of giant honeybees attacked dozens of guests at the Chiang Rai Governor’s official residence. The incident, which occurred around 9:15 a.m. on April 23, 2026, sent at least 30 people to the hospital after smoke from food stalls reportedly agitated a large nest in a nearby tree.
Government officials and private sector representatives had gathered at the century-old residence on Thanalai Road to participate in the “Dam Hua” ceremony. This northern Thai tradition involves pouring scented water on the hands of elders—in this case, Governor Chucheep Pongchai—to show respect and seek blessings for the Songkran season.
The festivities were in full swing when the colony of giant honeybees (Apis dorsata), nesting high in a large tree near the provincial Red Cross office, suddenly descended upon the crowd. Witness reports describe a sudden cloud of bees diving toward guests, causing many to flee the grounds in a panic.
Dozens Injured in Sudden Swarm
According to the Manager Online, the attack left many attendees nursing multiple stings. Some victims were seen frantically removing their shirts to shake off clinging bees, while others attempted to help those trapped in the thick of the swarm.
“The bees just started diving at everyone,” said one witness who fled toward the street. “People were screaming and running in every direction. It happened so fast.”
Chiang Rai provincial authorities quickly coordinated with emergency services as the scale of the injuries became clear.

Despite the initial terror, the bees eventually retreated to their nest or dispersed as the smoke cleared. Once the area was deemed safe and the injured were under medical care, Governor Chucheep Pongchai proceeded with the formal “Dam Hua” ritual.
Officials noted that while the event was marred by the attack, the importance of maintaining the Lanna cultural tradition prevailed. However, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks of hosting large outdoor gatherings near active wildlife habitats, especially during the hot season when bees can be more aggressive.
The Governor’s office has not yet commented on whether the nest will be relocated or if safety protocols for future outdoor events will be adjusted.
