CHIANG MAI – Over 250 police officers swept through Chiang Mai on Monday to crack down on illegal business networks. They targeted 31 companies suspected of using Thai proxy owners to hide true foreign ownership. This massive raid led to several arrests and uncovered hundreds of millions of baht in real estate.
Key Takeaways
- Massive Asset Seizure: Authorities raided 31 companies holding land worth approximately 633 million baht.
- Targeted Arrests: Police secured arrest warrants for 22 suspects across several nationalities, capturing five on Monday.
- Future Crackdowns: Police plan more raids for popular tourist destinations like Phuket, Krabi, and Chon Buri.
The joint operation targeted 18 different locations across northern Thailand. Officers carefully searched company files and physical premises. They wanted to expose hidden foreign control within these businesses.
According to a report from the Bangkok Post, the companies used illegal corporate structures. Out of the 31 businesses, 16 allegedly used Thai proxy shareholders. The remaining 15 companies simply breached legal foreign shareholding limits.
Furthermore, these businesses controlled a massive amount of valuable property. They held roughly 20 rai of land in the area. In total, this real estate is valued at a staggering 633 million baht.
Suspects and Arrest Warrants
The ongoing investigation identified a total of 74 suspects connected to the proxy companies. As a result, police obtained court arrest warrants for 22 individuals. The wanted list includes citizens from China, Myanmar, India, Thailand, and Britain.
On Monday, officers successfully arrested five of these key suspects. Two of those detained were Indian nationals. The other three arrested suspects were from Myanmar.
Interestingly, some Thai suspects were already behind bars before the raids even began. One man has been locked in the Chiang Mai Central Prison since 2021. However, his name appeared as a primary shareholder in two of the raided companies.
The jailed man told police a shocking story about his business involvement. A former inmate originally invited him to join a lucrative investment project. He was asked to hand over his ID card and house registration documents.
Massive Corporate Fraud
He honestly believed these documents were just for registering the new company. However, he never received a single baht from the promised investments. Now, he faces extra legal trouble because his identity was used in this corporate scam.
Police are aggressively pursuing everyone involved in this massive corporate fraud. Deputy Police Chief Samran Nuanma confirmed they have taken serious legal action against directors and shareholders. He stated they want to catch the true beneficiaries operating behind the scenes.
Consequently, this law enforcement crackdown will not stop in the north. Authorities plan to launch similar operations in other popular provinces very soon. Locations like Phuket, Krabi, Phangnga, and Surat Thani are next on the target list.
This strict enforcement shows that Thailand is highly serious about protecting its local economy. Foreign investors must follow local business laws and shareholding limits. If they use illegal proxy owners, they will face severe legal consequences.
