BANGKOK – A quiet night at a well-known temple in Thailand recently turned into a terrifying scene of violence. A local abbot was shot multiple times inside his own living quarters. The attack happened late at night in Kamphaeng Phet province. Naturally, the local community is now in a state of shock. Police are rushing to find the person responsible for this brutal crime.
This report looks into the complete details of the attack, the ongoing police investigation, and the strange mystery surrounding the event.
The incident took place at Wat Krajom Thong. This temple is located in the Ang Thong sub-district of Kamphaeng Phet. Late on the night of May 17, an unknown attacker entered the private living quarters, traditionally known as a kuti.
Inside, Phra Athikan Bunlert Akapunyo, the temple’s abbot, was going about his normal religious duties. Suddenly, someone quietly opened the back door. The attacker fired a weapon directly at the abbot from behind. Police highly suspect the weapon was a homemade gun, which is sometimes used in local crimes. After firing, the shooter quickly ran away into the dark.
Despite his severe injuries, the abbot bravely managed to walk outside. He called out into the night for help. Other monks and local villagers heard him and quickly came to his aid. They immediately rushed him to the local hospital for emergency medical care.

The Extent of the Injuries
The attack was incredibly brutal. Medical staff found 16 separate bullet wounds on the abbot’s body. The injuries were heavily concentrated on his right side.
Here is a breakdown of where the bullets hit:
- The right ear and head area
- The right shoulder blade
- The right shoulder
- The right hip and lower body
Currently, the abbot is recovering in the hospital. Doctors are watching his condition very closely. According to MGR Online, he was strong enough to speak with the police from his hospital bed to share his account of the terrifying night.

A Peaceful Community in Shock
Wat Krajom Thong is typically a very peaceful place. Furthermore, the abbot is highly respected by the local people. He is known locally as a “developer monk.” This means he works hard to improve the temple grounds and help the surrounding community.
Villagers and monks are very upset about the attack. They say the abbot is a simple, kind man. He does not argue with people, and he has never had any major conflicts in the area.
When asked about why someone would do this, the abbot was completely confused. He told the police he had no enemies. He only guides and teaches the other monks. Sometimes, people come to him to borrow small amounts of money. However, he clearly stated these amounts were simply too small to cause such a violent reaction.
The police investigation has uncovered some very strange details. These clues make the case even more mysterious for the investigators.
First, there is the abbot’s guard dog. He owns a Pitbull. The dog is specifically kept near the door of his living quarters to warn him of strangers. Strangely, the dog did not bark or attack when the shooter entered. This important detail suggests the dog might have recognized the attacker.
Second, the security cameras are not working. All the CCTV cameras inside the living quarters and around the temple area are broken. Because of this equipment failure, the police do not have any video footage of the crime to help identify the suspect.

The Ongoing Police Investigation
Police officers from the Mueang Kamphaeng Phet Police Station are working non-stop on this case. They are gathering physical evidence from the crime scene. They are also looking deeply into the clues left behind.
The police currently have a clear plan of action:
- Collect and test all physical evidence from the temple grounds.
- Interview all the monks who currently live at the temple.
- Talk to villagers who live near the temple walls.
- Look for any possible motives or hidden financial conflicts.
The main goal is to find the attacker quickly. Law enforcement wants to bring this person to justice as soon as possible. An attack on a monk is considered a very serious crime in Thailand. It deeply hurts the feelings of the local Buddhist community, as temples are meant to be safe, sacred spaces.
For now, the abbot is focusing on his physical recovery. The community is praying for his quick return to the temple. Meanwhile, the police will continue their active search for the shooter.
