LAMPHUN – A former temple committee member in Lamphun spoke out again to the media, accusing the abbot of a well-known temple of molesting a newly ordained monk. This happened during a summer ordination program for novices.
The victim’s family reported it to the police. Now, the abbot has left the temple. No one can reach him.
The incident took place between March 25 and April 6 this year. A young man, son of a police officer with a master’s degree, joined the program. He was ordained as a monk at the temple in Umong subdistrict, Mueang Lamphun district.
While sitting in the temple grounds, the abbot called him to his private room. There, the abbot molested him. The young monk ran out and told his guardians right away. They took him straight to Lamphun City Police Station to file charges.
Today, reporters visited the temple. It felt quiet and empty. Most parents pulled their newly ordained sons out. They moved them to other temples. Only three novices remained. They plan to leave soon, too.
Mr. Pitak, 62, lives nearby. He helped start the temple as a committee member. He told reporters he never expected this in their community. The abbot just became head monk. Yet, he acted this way.
It hurts the faith of local supporters. The abbot vanished after the news broke. Police now handle the case. Shame falls on believers like us. Pitak urges senior monks to act firmly.
Pitak added more details. The abbot lacks openness with money. For years, locals never saw donation reports from events like Kathina robes or forest robes. Recently, the Luang Pho Yot lottery fair raised funds.
When people asked about it, the abbot got mad and yelled. No one dares question him now. As a result, he fled and stays out of touch.
Meanwhile, other victims came forward. They say this abbot molested them before. Some have already filed police reports. Now, they group up to press more charges.
