Paris Fashion Week: Doja Cat And Kylie Jenner Go Wild

(CTN News) – These days, it seems impossible to find truly groundbreaking red carpet moments: yes, Doja Cat celebrities are relentlessly styled and groomed, but that’s not the same as taking jaw-dropping risks, as Doja Cat did at Schiaparelli Couture’s Dante’s Inferno-themed Paris Fashion Week show last week.

The pop star and rapper reportedly took nearly five hours to apply 30,000 Swarovski crystals and red body paint to the black carpet. In addition to the opaque red bodice, she wore a similar crystal-studded skirt, a long scarlet shawl, and dark knee-high boots.

In The Daily Beast, Susan Scafidi, academic director of Fordham University’s Fashion Law Institute, said, “Elsa Schiaparelli would have loved this look.”

The otherworldly nature of the look is appropriate for our current cultural reckoning of reality versus artifice, as red is one of the most evocative colors, whether used to convey Dante’s Inferno or good luck in the lunar new year.

The outré makeup look was created by legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath. On Instagram, McGrath wrote, “Doja’s patience and dedication during the 4 hours and 58 minutes it took to create the look were truly inspiring.” The final outcome was a magical, mesmerizing masterpiece.

As well as Lady Gaga’s classic looks, Doja Cat outfit recalled Rihanna’s iconic 2014 “naked dress”, which featured a transparent web of gems. “Do my tits bother you?” Rihanna asked a clearly rattled reporter. “They’re covered in Swarovski crystals girl!”

Also wearing Sciaparelli, Kylie Jenner opted for a fresh look. On the shoulder of her simple black dress was a giant lion head, reminiscent of Luna Lovegood’s lion hat from Harry Potter.

(Critics said it glorified trophy hunting; the designer clarified it was all fake fur, no animals were harmed.)

According to Angharad Coates, an art and design PR executive based between Paris and New York City, the Doja Cat look was fantastic.

“It’s totally in line with Elsa Schiaparelli’s love of surrealism and artistic envelope-pushing. As a Leo woman, I adore the lion look. I recently saw the Schiaparelli show at the Museum des Arts Décoratifs. Aslan-chic.”

Cultural critic Juan A. Ramirez disagrees. Ramirez told The Daily Beast that he doesn’t have any skin in the Doja Cat fashion game since it’s boring and lacking in glamour, and Kylie Jenner epitomizes “you can’t buy style.”

“It looks horrible. It looks like my dad bought me this lion plush from FAO Schwarz.”

Will Doja Cat look be just the first of many wild fashion week looks to come? According to Coates, the genre could use a resurgence. “She’s like old school Gaga,” she said.

Despite Gaga’s legendary 2010 MTV VMAs appearance, there wasn’t a sudden trend for meat dresses after her appearance.
