(CTN News) – Several hours before Dave Chappelle was scheduled to hit the stage at the Minneapolis Civic Auditorium, the venue canceled the show due to low attendance.

The venue canceled Dave Chappelle’s Minneapolis show due to backlash

It was well known that the venue featured in Prince’s 1984 film “Purple Rain” refused to host Chappelle’s comedy show due to backlash over comments made in some of his previous Netflix specials that were criticized as transphobic in nature.
First Avenue posted to its verified Instagram account that “Dave Chappelle’s show at First Avenue tonight has been cancelled and is being relocated to the Varsity Theater,” announcing the move.
The statement reads: “To our staff, artists, and community members, we want to apologize and let you know that we appreciate your feedback.”
We feel that it is our responsibility to be up to par with the highest standards, and that we must eliminate any possibility of letting people down. First Avenue is not just a room with people inside, and we understand that it is a meaningful place that goes beyond them.
It continues with this message: “First Avenue has worked very hard to make our venues the most safe places in the country, and we will continue to carry out that mission with passion.
We believe deeply in diverse voices and the freedom of artistic expression, but in honoring that, we lost sight of the impact that this decision would have. We know that some will not agree with this decision; we welcome your input.”
There have been many jokes about the trans community in Dave Chappelle sets over the years, but his Netflix special “The Closer” in 2021 raised the ire of some in the LGBTQ+ community and its allies after Chappelle said he was “team TERF,” which stands for “trans-exclusionary radical feminist.”
The special, which was nominated for two Emmy Awards earlier this month, featured an appearance by comedian Dave Chappelle during which he said, “Gender is a fact.”.
During the appearance, Chappelle said, “All of the people in this room, every single person on the planet had to pass through the legs of a woman in order to be alive. That is a fact.”
