Advantages Of Lithium RV Batteries

When shopping for deep-cycle batteries for RV (Recreational Vehicle), one comes across both lead acid RV batteries and lithium RV batteries.

Lead-acid batteries are “flooded” because, in these batteries, a liquid electrolyte completely covers the lead plates.

At the same time, Lithium batteries are rechargeable 12-volt batteries. It is an alternative to lead-acid batteries, particularly for RV users who are off the grid and usually rely on solar power.

Lithium batteries and lithium-ion batteries are the same. It has metal lithium in place of lead.

There are various types of lithium batteries, and they are usually lithium-iron phosphate batteries. We know these as LiFePO4 batteries.

In RV, these batteries power appliances like electric bulbs, cooking stoves, air conditioners, etc. These batteries power all electrical appliances.

Companies supply customized household appliances mould products as they provide these molds to manufacturers of refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, etc., which is a boon to RV manufacturers.

RV manufacturers can now ask the electrical appliance manufacturers to supply them with customized size appliances that go quickly with the interior design of the RV, more like a customized design.

Advantages Of Using Lithium Batteries In RV:

Safety

Lithium batteries have built-in safety measures, Including Battery Management System (BMS) that protects them from overheating.

This system automatically shuts down the battery when it overheats, preventing fire or explosion.

Overheating protection is not there in lead-acid batteries.

More Mileage

A Lithium RV battery uses up to 99% of their rated capacity, whereas a lead-acid battery usually last up to 50% of their rated capacity.

Using lithium batteries is more attractive as it helps in giving extra usage time while using the appliances.

Steady Voltage

A lithium RV battery provides a stable voltage as it discharges complete charge (0% state of charge). A lead acid battery could only use 50 % of its capacity.

After 50%, the voltage drops to zero suddenly, damaging the battery if discharged further.

Lighter Weight

Lithium batteries are almost less than 50% lighter when compared to lead-acid batteries. They are lightweight and compact. Making them easier to install, thus decreasing the overall weight of your RV and increasing its efficiency.

Environment Friendly

As one comes closer to mother nature, the awareness of becoming environmentally friendly is rising.

Lithium-ion batteries create less wastage than lead-acid batteries, as they last longer, almost ten times more than lead-acid batteries

. Made of materials that are easy to recycle; these batteries give clean and green energy when used with solar panels—reducing CO2 emissions and becoming environmentally friendly.

Greater Lifespan

Lithium batteries’ lifespan is longer when compared to lead-acid batteries. In the initial stage, the cost of lithium batteries is more than double that of lead-acid batteries.

Since its longer lifespan, it becomes a value for money in the long run. They will last more than a decade, making lithium-ion batteries the right choice for RV vehicles.

A lead acid RV battery typically lasts almost four hundred charge/discharge cycles and less if allowed to discharge below 50%.

A lithium battery lasts as many as five thousand cycles. Therefore, the life of a lithium RV battery is ten times longer.

Easy Maintenance

Lead-acid batteries take more hours to charge fully. Sulfation occurs in these batteries. We must constantly check and add water when the electrolyte level falls.

Lithium-ion batteries do not have these problems. These batteries do not require any maintenance. They are maintenance free batteries.

Shelf Life

There are RV owners who work full-time and use their RVs only during vacation. They may be living only a short time in their RV.

It brings peace of mind knowing lithium-ion batteries are safe, even when not in use, unlike lead acid batteries which deteriorate when not in use.

Since it has a longer shelf life, lithium-ion batteries are good to go, even after long idle periods.

Faster Charging

Lithium-ion RV batteries charge faster compared to lead-acid batteries. Hence, one can immediately charge lithium batteries fully.

Also, these batteries’ efficiency comes to the forefront when charging from solar panels, as it absorbs the maximum amount of energy before sunset, thus giving you efficient power to run your appliances even during night-time.

Conclusion

While coming to RV batteries, many owners still use lead-acid batteries due to their low-cost factor. But in the long run, they will realize the advantages of using lithium-ion batteries, as these are superior to traditional lead-acid batteries.

We use lithium batteries in our mobile phones, laptops, cameras, etc.

Technology has gone through a sea change in the last decade, thus making lithium-ion batteries an excellent choice for RV vehicles.

Since lithium-ion batteries have immense potential to be a better suitable battery (when compared to lead acid batteries), it is advisable to use these in RV vehicles.
