Threads Expand To 'Most' English- And Spanish-Speaking Countries

(CTN News) – The Instagram Threads search feature is now available in “most” English- and Spanish-speaking countries, according to a post by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Threads.

In addition to Argentina, India, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the expansion will impact countries where people post in English and Spanish.

When Threads, Meta’s attempt to compete with Twitter, launched, it only showed Threads users, not their content. Users can now search for keywords and topics on the platform, not just ones posted by others, with full-text search, introduced last week.

“At the time of the initial tests, the company said it was actively listening to community feedback and working on additional features to improve the search experience.

The rapid expansion of search to more markets is part of Instagram’s broader effort to increase engagement. Its onboarding experience was tied into Instagram, making it easier for users to immediately have both followers and a following, which helped become the fastest app to reach 100 million users.

Since Threads’ arrival in July, user activity has declined.

According to mobile intelligence firm Sensor Tower,’ daily active users have dropped 82% since launch, and it now has just 8 million users. Due to this drop, Threads has quickly added more features users have requested, including search and a fully functional web app.

However, data from digital intelligence firm Similarweb showed that the latter had little impact on increasing usage of the platform. It found that the traffic bump from the web app launch was only 3% globally.

In addition to chronological feeds, likes, and reposts, Threads was updated shortly after its launch. In addition to lists, bookmarks, and trends, users still need more to switch from Twitter/X.

Without search and trends, Is less compelling. X’s timeline is more than just updates; it’s a way to stay up-to-date. While Today Threads has panoramic photos, it doesn’t feel like real-time news.

Threads might get an extra boost with the search expansion, since Elon Musk is threatening to sue the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a group that fights antisemitism, extremism, and bigotry.

According to Musk, X’s declining ad revenues aren’t due to X’s now less stringent moderation policies in favor of Musk’s “free speech.” Since Musk’s changes, there’s been an increase in antisemitic and hate speech on the platform, according to the ADL and others.

Currently, Threads isn’t the only Twitter competitor working on search. Also last week, Mastodon announced new search features that allow users to filter posts on its top instance, mastodon. social, by using a variety of search operators.
