UDON THANI — What was meant to be a night of Songkran celebration turned into a heartbreaking tragedy early Tuesday morning when a pickup truck carrying teenagers back from Songkran festivities lost control, resulting in two fatalities.
The accident occurred at approximately 12:15 AM on April 14, 2026, on the Thap Than–Krok Phra Road near Ban Tan Thaeo in the Thap Than District. According to local police from the Thap Than Police Station, the vehicle was traveling back from water-splashing activities in Uthai Thani city when the driver lost control just one kilometer away from the group’s destination.
The vehicle involved, an older model green Toyota Hilux Mighty-X, was carrying six teenagers in the rear bed along with sound equipment used for the festivities. Preliminary investigations by Manager Online suggest the vehicle was traveling at high speed.
As the truck reached a curve or attempted to avoid an obstacle, it swerved violently. Because the tailgate had been left open to accommodate the passengers and speakers, three of the teenagers were thrown from the vehicle and struck the pavement with immense force.
The casualties identified so far include:
- Ms. Pavita, 15, was pronounced dead at the scene. She lived nearby with her grandparents.
- A 13-year-old girl (identified only as “Few”) succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at Thap Than Hospital.
- Four other passengers: One sustained minor injuries, while two others escaped physical harm.
Driver Missing from the Scene
In a troubling twist, witnesses and responding officers noted that the driver and the passenger who had been sitting in the front cabin were nowhere to be found when help arrived. Residents reported hearing a loud crash and rushing out to find the victims scattered across the road.
Local authorities are currently tracking down the driver for questioning. They aim to determine if alcohol or mechanical failure played a role in the crash. The vehicle has been impounded at the Thap Than Police Station for further forensic examination.
This incident marks the third road fatality in Uthai Thani during the “Seven Dangerous Days” of the 2026 Songkran Festival. Despite annual safety campaigns by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), accidents involving passengers riding in the back of pickup trucks remain a significant concern for Thai authorities.
Safety experts often highlight several factors that contribute to these tragedies:
- High Speed: Difficult to control older vehicles during sudden maneuvers.
- Rear-Bed Risks: Passengers in the back have no safety restraints or protection during a rollover or sudden stop.
- Fatigue and Impairment: Late-night driving after a day-long celebration increases the risk of driver error.
The local community has been left in shock, especially as the victims were so close to home. The accident serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with holiday travel and the importance of road safety regulations during Thailand’s most famous festival.
