UDON THANI – The vibrant Songkran festivities in Uthai Thani took a dark turn on the evening of April 13, 2026. What was supposed to be a night of joyful water splashing and celebration ended in chaos as a violent confrontation broke out between rival youth groups.
The incident, which occurred right in front of the Provincial Hall, left several people injured and sent crowds of festival-goers running for safety. The confrontation began around 8:00 PM at the Suphannika Ground on Sri Uthai Road, a central hub for the city’s New Year celebrations. Witnesses describe a sudden shift in the atmosphere when a group of young men arrived at the scene.
According to reports from MGR Online, the attackers were allegedly linked to a local group from Khao Phawaeng, accompanied by associates from the Krok Phra District in neighboring Nakhon Sawan province.
The situation escalated rapidly from verbal taunts to physical violence. Witnesses reported seeing individuals jumping out of a pickup truck before opening fire and wielding knives.

Casualties and Injuries Reported
The fallout from the brawl has left the local community in shock. Emergency services and police rushed to the scene following reports of gunfire and stabbings. While the exact number of participants is still being determined, the physical toll is clear:
- Gunshot Victim: One man suffered a severe injury when a bullet passed through one leg and into the other. He was rushed to Uthai Thani Hospital for emergency surgery.
- Knife Injuries: Two other individuals sustained significant slash wounds to their fingers and hands while attempting to defend themselves.
- Explosives: Bystanders reported hearing the loud bang of “ping-pong” bombs (small, homemade explosives) being thrown during the retreat of the attackers.
Friends of the victims waiting at the hospital indicated that the groups had a history of bad blood, suggesting this was a targeted attack rather than a random act of violence.
For many families celebrating at the Provincial Hall, the night was a terrifying ordeal. One witness, identified only as “Ms. A,” shared her harrowing experience. She saw the attackers exit their vehicle and shout threats before a handgun was drawn.
“I heard the shot and immediately ran to find my boyfriend,” she told reporters. “By the time I reached him, he had already been hit. It was pure panic.”
The rapid escalation forced local authorities to take drastic measures. To prevent further violence and ensure public safety, police officially ordered the cessation of all Songkran activities in the immediate area, instructing the public to return home and clear the streets.

Police Launch Manhunt for Suspects
The Uthai Thani Provincial Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the riot. Using witness testimony and local surveillance footage, investigators believe they have identified the primary instigator, a man known locally as “Arm.”
Law enforcement officials have stated that they are tracking the suspects who fled the scene immediately after the shooting. “We know who they are, and we are working with neighboring districts to bring them into custody,” a spokesperson for the local police station confirmed.
This incident has raised concerns regarding security during major public holidays in Thailand. While Songkran is globally recognized as the “World’s Largest Water Fight,” local authorities often struggle with alcohol-fueled disputes and long-standing rivalries that boil over during the crowded events.
If you are planning to attend public gatherings during the remainder of the holiday, keep these safety tips in mind:
- Stay Aware: Monitor the mood of the crowd and move away from any groups that appear confrontational.
- Identify Exits: Always know the quickest way out of a crowded area.
- Follow Orders: If authorities ask to clear an area, do so immediately to allow emergency services access.
The Uthai Thani community remains on high alert as the search for the perpetrators continues. For now, the festive spirit of the city has been dampened by a night of violence that many will not soon forget.
