According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, spoke to him about providing additional Starlink antennas to Ukraine’s destroyed cities that do not have access to the internet.
“I am grateful for the support you have given to Ukraine, both verbally and in deeds,” Zelensky said in a tweet early Sunday. “We will be receiving another batch of Starlink systems next week for the cities that have been destroyed.”
According to the Starlink website, users can use Starlink antennas to connect to Starlink’s satellite-based internet service, which, based on the company’s website, is “ideal for areas where access to the internet has been intermittent or impossible.”
According to its website, emergency responders in disaster scenarios can assemble the Starlink dishes within a matter of minutes so that they can monitor the situation.
In response to a plea from Ukraine’s vice prime minister, Elon Musk has dispatched a truckload of Starlink equipment to the country amid concerns Ukrainians will lose access to the internet if Russia continues its attacks on communication infrastructure.
Elon Musk has nevertheless cautioned Ukrainians against using the technology “without caution”. In a tweet on Thursday, Elon Musk said the Starlink system has a high probability of being attacked by Russian forces because it is “the only non-Russian communication system that is available in some parts of Ukraine.”.
