CHIANG RAI – In a major blow to drug trafficking networks, Chiang Rai police successfully intercepted a large shipment of narcotics on Saturday night, May 4, 2024. During a targeted operation at the Tha Kor checkpoint in Mae Suai District, authorities discovered nearly 2 million methamphetamine tablets hidden inside a modified six-wheel truck.
The driver, a 26-year-old man from Nakhon Si Thammarat, was arrested at the scene on Highway 118 while attempting to transport the illicit cargo from Northern Thailand to the southern city of Hat Yai. This operation is part of an ongoing effort by the Chiang Rai Provincial Police to dismantle long-distance smuggling routes.
The arrest followed a period of intense surveillance by the Narcotics Suppression Division. Intelligence reports suggested that a southern trafficking syndicate was moving into Chiang Rai to acquire a large batch of drugs. Officers spotted a suspicious yellow Foton truck with Chonburi license plates entering the province and tracked it as it navigated the western bypass of Chiang Rai city.
According to MGR Online, the driver headed toward the Mae Yao sub-district to collect the shipment before turning south. When police stopped the vehicle at the checkpoint, the driver’s nervous behavior prompted a thorough search. Inside the cargo hold, investigators found a professionally built secret compartment designed to bypass standard inspections.

- The Suspect: A 26-year-old male identified only as Mr. Itthirit, a resident of Thung Yai District, Nakhon Si Thammarat.
- The Route: The drugs were picked up in Mae Yao, Chiang Rai, with a planned delivery destination of Hat Yai, Songkhla.
- The Payment: The suspect confessed that he was promised 50,000 THB (roughly $1,350 USD) for the delivery.
The suspect is currently in custody at the Mae Suai Police Station. He faces severe charges under Thailand’s Category 1 Narcotics laws, including possession for sale. Authorities emphasized that this scale of trafficking significantly threatens national security and public safety due to the potential for widespread addiction.
