BANGKOK – A quiet neighborhood in Bangkok’s Khlong Sam Wa district was shaken this Songkran holiday following the discovery of a local couple found dead in their residence. Authorities believe the tragedy was fueled by mounting financial pressure following the closure of their family business.
On the morning of April 15, 2026, police were called to a detached house in the Bang Chan subdistrict. Inside, they discovered the bodies of a 53-year-old former businessman, identified as Mr. Tharanin, and his 33-year-old wife, Miss Kansurang.
The discovery was made by Mr. Tharanin’s 80-year-old father. According to police reports from Thairath, the family had been away on a trip for the Songkran festival and returned home late on the evening of April 14.
At the time of their return, the father assumed the couple was simply asleep, as their bedroom door was locked and the air conditioning was running. It wasn’t until the following morning, when the family gathered for a traditional Buddhist water-pouring ceremony, that concerns arose. When the couple failed to answer their door or phone calls, the father used a spare key to enter the room.
Evidence Pointing to Murder-Suicide
Forensic officers and investigators from the Bang Chan Police Station arrived at the scene to find a grim sight on the second floor.
- The Husband: Mr. Tharanin was found lying on the bed with a fatal gunshot wound under his chin. A .38 caliber revolver was still in his right hand.
- The Wife: Miss Kansurang was found nearby in her pajamas. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
- The Timeline: Medical examiners estimate the couple had been deceased for approximately 24 hours before they were found.
A suicide note was recovered from a desk in the bedroom. While the specific contents of the note have not been fully released to the public, investigators suggest it highlights the immense personal struggle the couple was facing.
The investigation has shed light on a narrative familiar to many struggling in the current economic climate. Mr. Tharanin and his wife previously operated a logistics firm. However, the business eventually folded due to a severe economic downturn.
In an attempt to pivot, the couple began selling goods online. Unfortunately, they faced intense competition and low profit margins. Friends and family indicated that the pair had become increasingly stressed over rising debts and an income that could no longer cover their basic living expenses.
The local community has expressed shock at the incident, describing the family as generally quiet and hardworking. Police Colonel Kritidej Phumthanes, Chief of the Bang Chan Police Station, confirmed that forensic evidence currently points toward a murder-suicide, with the husband believed to have shot his wife before turning the weapon on himself.
The bodies have been transported to the Forensic Institute at the Police Hospital for a detailed autopsy to confirm the exact cause and sequence of events.
