Variety has learned that “Inventing Anna” actress Julia Garner has been offered the role of Madonna in an upcoming biopic about the pop icon, which is based on her life.
Over a dozen candidates have been considered for the part, one insider said, but Julia Garner has emerged as a frontrunner – one that Madonna herself will direct. It is expected that Garner’s team will accept the offer, according to another source.
The film is being produced by Universal Pictures and will follow the artist’s early days. Amy Pascal is attached as a producer to the project, which was won by Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chief Donna Langley in a bidding war among multiple studios.
There is no information about a production timeline or other principal cast members. Odessa Young and Alexa Demie, stars of “Euphoria,” are also in contention for the role. There have also been suggestions for singers such as Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira. Music-heavy productions require experienced singers and dancers, so auditions were reportedly gruelling.
She expressed her wish to convey “the incredible journey I’ve been on as an artist, musician, dancer – a human being trying to earn a living. The focus of this project will always be music. Music has kept me going, and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold stories and who better to tell them than me.
According to Langley, Madonna is a humanitarian, artist, rebel, and the ultimate icon.
