CHIANG RAI – Thai police recently used artificial intelligence to track and arrest a major drug smuggling gang. Officers stopped the suspects at the Huai Rai checkpoint in Phrae province. They seized about 1.7 million methamphetamine pills during the roadside bust.
The Region 5 Police command used smart AI systems to monitor suspicious vehicles. The system flagged cars driving from Phayao and Lampang down toward central Thailand. Officers quickly set up a trap to catch the smugglers in the act.
Key Takeaways
- Police used AI technology to track a suspicious drug smuggling convoy.
- Officers seized 1.7 million methamphetamine pills at a checkpoint in Phrae.
- Four suspects were arrested after their scout car returned to the scene.
According to police, the operation targeted two specific vehicles traveling on Highway 11. The first vehicle was a grey Isuzu pickup acting as a scout. This scout car drove through the checkpoint very fast to check for police.
Soon after, a bronze Toyota followed the scout car down the busy highway. Police quickly stopped the Toyota and asked to search the vehicle. Inside the car, they found two men from Phetchabun province nervously waiting.
The men were identified as 38-year-old Wiphop and 68-year-old Pranom. Officers searched the back of their vehicle and made a massive discovery. They found nine large sacks entirely filled with illegal drugs.
In total, the police pulled about 1.7 million meth pills from those nine sacks. The officers immediately arrested both men and secured the dangerous drugs. However, the police operation was not quite over yet.
Meanwhile, the drivers of the scout car realized the Toyota was no longer following them. Therefore, they decided to turn around and drive back to the police checkpoint. This foolish mistake made the police’s job much easier.
A Foolish Mistake Leads to More Criminal Arrests
When the scout car returned, officers immediately recognized the grey Isuzu pickup. They quickly stopped the vehicle and detained the two people inside. The suspects were identified as 40-year-old Songkran and 37-year-old Sirichanya.
Both of these suspects also came from the Lom Sak district in Phetchabun province. During initial questioning, the suspects confessed to their roles in the drug ring. They admitted that they picked up the drugs from a resting point in Chiang Rai.
The criminal gang planned to deliver the massive drug shipment to a buyer in Phetchabun. Instead, all four suspects are now in police custody facing serious charges. The seized drugs and vehicles were handed over to the local police station.
Currently, investigation teams are working hard to expand the case further. They want to find the top leaders of this drug network. The successful use of AI shows how modern technology is helping solve crimes.
Law enforcement officials hope this bust will send a strong message to other criminals. Smuggling dangerous drugs through Thailand is becoming much harder today. With AI on their side, police are catching more criminals than ever before.
