Top Things to Do in Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is the northernmost major city of Thailand and is the perfect destination for those who love the outdoors.

Thailand is a country that’s abundant in culture with various religions, the most predominant group being Theravada Buddhist.

Despite this, between five and 10 percent of the population is Muslim, meaning Ramadan 2023 will be observed in the country.

In addition to the diverse culture of Thailand, Chiang Rai also boasts the natural beauty of rivers, rice, paddies, mountain trails, and more.

Similarly, the region has a rich history, making it one of the most unique and interesting places for sightseeing globally.

Watch the Golden Clocktower’s Light and Sound Show

Located on a roundabout in the city center is the Golden Clocktower. While standing at the side of the road and staring at a roundabout may sound slightly unusual, the one we’re referring to is far from ordinary.

During the day, the ornate golden fretwork sparkles in the sun; however, during the night, it lights up the city.

Every evening at 7 pm, 8 pm, 9 pm, and 12 am respectively, a light and sound show takes place.

Whether you gaze as you wander past or book into a nearby bar and restaurant, this is a must-see for anyone visiting the city.

Visit the White Temple

Chalermchai Kositpipat is one of the most famous Thai artists, and he also happens to be a Chiang Rai native.

Therefore, his distinctive artistic style is displayed across the city, with his most famous work being found in Rong Khun, his home village that sits on the outskirts of Chiang Rai.

This is otherwise known as the White Temple, a piece of architecture that boasts the beauty of contemporary ad classic styles alike.

The building is part religious dwelling and part art gallery with shimmering white exterior that sparkles under the sunlight.

On the inside, the walls are abundant in thought-provoking contemporary artwork, making for one of the most extraordinary temples throughout the country.

Stay at the Golden Triangle

Chiang Rai is home to a border region, wherein Thailand meets Myanmar and Laos, which is otherwise known as the Golden Triangle.

Previously, the region was renowned for opium production; however, tea and coffee plantations have since taken the place of poppy fields.

While day tours of the Golden Triangle are available, nothing beats a stay within the unique region.

Whether you’re on a budget or looking for a luxury stay, there are various options that allow you to cater your stay to your financial requirements.

During your visit, make sure to take a trip to the opium museum and Sop Ruak.

Discover the Hill-Tribe Communities

Within Chiang Rai, many hill-tribe communities can be found, including Lisu, Akha, and Karen.

Before journeying to one of these villages, be sure to pay the Hill-Tribe Museum a visit; this way, you’ll be able to learn more about the culture and etiquette before entering these regions.

Not only does this help you avoid offending anyone, but it also helps you remain safe in unfamiliar territories.

Visit the Doi Tung and Mae Fah Luang Gardens

Last but not least, you might venture into the mountains in anticipation of stunning gardens, gorgeous views, and cooler air.

In addition to the natural beauty, the space is a favorite of royals, being enjoyed by HRH Princess Srinagarindra, the mother of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In fact, this was the space in which a royal villa was built for the Princess Mother due to the work that she did to empower hill-tribe communities. Chiang Rai presents a cultural experience like no other.
