Apple Increase Starting Pay For US Employees To $22 Per Hour

(CTN News) – According to Apple, the company will raise the starting pay for US employees as companies face a tight labor market and a surge in unionization efforts amid rising inflation.

Apple (AAPL) said in a statement to Reuters that the company’s U.S. team members will receive $22 per hour starting pay, or more depending upon the market, a 45% increase over 2018.

The company is increasing its overall compensation budget as part of its annual performance review process this year, a company spokesperson said.

The Wall Street Journal first reported that Apple had informed some workers that their annual reviews would be advanced by three months and the new pay would begin in early July.

A request for more information on the compensation changes was not immediately responded to by Apple.

Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, is notorious for its reticent culture, but last year some former and current workers began criticizing the company’s working conditions online.

Apple’s Atlanta store filed a petition in April to hold a union election, hoping to become the company’s first US store to unionize amid a wave of labor activity at other major firms.

Google (GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT) are among other tech companies that have revised performance reviews or adjusted pay in order to retain employees.
