BANGKOK — In a disturbing incident that has shaken the festive spirit of the Thai capital, authorities have identified a soldier as the primary suspect in the molesting of a 15-year-old girl during the Songkran celebrations on Khao San Road.
The suspect, confirmed to be a private in the Royal Thai Army, allegedly committed the crime inside a public restroom while thousands celebrated just meters away.
Pol. Col. Sanong Sangmanee, superintendent of the Chana Songkhram Police Station, provided an update on Thursday, April 16, stating that investigators have gathered significant evidence, including clear CCTV footage. The footage captures the harrowing moments when the young victim escaped the facility to seek help from a nearby attendant and bystanders.
The incident occurred during the height of the Songkran water festival, one of the world’s most famous street parties. According to reports from MGR Online, the victim was using a public restroom on Tanee Road, an artery connected to the main Khao San strip, when she was cornered.
CCTV footage shows the girl running out of the restroom door in a state of distress. Less than a minute later, the suspect is seen walking out calmly, passing the victim and her helpers before disappearing into the crowd on Tanee Road.
Military Cooperation and Legal Charges
The suspect’s military unit has reportedly taken him into custody for initial disciplinary action while police finalize the legal paperwork. Pol. Col. Sanong emphasized that despite the suspect’s military status, the law will be applied strictly.
“Because this was a brazen act committed in a major tourist destination, all agencies are cooperating fully,” the Superintendent stated. “There will be no protection for the wrongdoer. Those who commit crimes must face punishment.”
The police are currently preparing to press three major charges against the soldier:
- Indecent Assault: Forcing a minor into a sexual act.
- Deprivation of Liberty: Restraining the victim against her will.
- Physical Harm: Resulting from the struggle during the incident.
The attack has sparked a heated debate regarding safety at large-scale public events. While Khao San Road is known for its high security and heavy police presence during Songkran, the fact that such an assault could happen in a public restroom has raised alarms.
The victim is currently under the care of a multidisciplinary team, including social workers and psychologists, to ensure her mental and physical well-being. Formal interrogations will take place in the presence of these specialists to prevent further trauma to the minor.
The Chana Songkhram police are coordinating with the suspect’s commanding officers to have him handed over to civilian authorities. Once the victim’s statement is fully recorded with the multidisciplinary team, the arrest warrant will be formally executed.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to the “Tourist Police” or local authorities immediately, especially in high-traffic entertainment zones.
