Police Arrest Thai Man Smuggling Chinese Nationals into Chiang Rai

CHIANG RAI – Late on the night of May 2, 2026, immigration police in Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai, arrested a 33-year-old local man for illegally smuggling two Chinese nationals into Thailand along Route 1129.

Authorities set up a targeted checkpoint to catch the suspects after receiving a tip about a local human smuggling ring. The driver hoped to make a quick profit, but he instead drove right into a police trap.

The arrest happened around 10:00 PM in the Wiang Subdistrict. Police set up a roadblock on a dark stretch of Route 1129. They were acting on solid intelligence gathered by the Chiang Saen Immigration investigation team. The team knew exactly what kind of vehicle to look for.

When a white pickup truck with Phetchabun license plates approached the checkpoint, officers ordered the driver to pull over. Inside the vehicle, police found the driver and two foreign passengers. The officers asked for identification and quickly realized the passengers did not have the proper paperwork to be in the country.

Police Colonel Pattarapong Inwanna, the Superintendent of Chiang Saen Immigration, directed the successful operation. He worked closely with Deputy Superintendent of Police Lieutenant Colonel Kittiwat Amnat and Inspector of Police Lieutenant Colonel Chuleekorn Limwisetsak.

The Suspects and the Charges

The police officially named the driver as Mr. Thai Boontham, a 33-year-old resident of Chiang Rai. Officers charged him with hiding and helping illegal aliens evade arrest. Because he is a local, police believe he used his knowledge of the area to avoid regular patrols.

The two passengers were identified as Chinese nationals. Mr. Xie Jia is 36 years old, and Mr. Pan Sijia is 30 years old. Both men face serious charges for entering and staying in Thailand without legal permission.

During the arrest, police seized several items as evidence to help build their case against the smugglers:

Two mobile phones, which the police will check for messages and contacts.
Various personal documents belonging to the suspects.

Man Received 2,000 Baht

After the arrest, the suspects told very different stories to the police. Mr. Thai claimed he was just a hired driver with no real power. He told officers he only received 2,000 baht for the trip. He insisted he was a small player in the operation and did not know the big bosses.

The two Chinese men claimed they knew nothing about the smuggling routes or the laws. They said their friends handled all the travel details and paid the fees upfront. They said they simply followed directions and got right into the truck.

However, police investigators paint a very different picture of the smuggling economy. According to their intelligence, the actual going rate to smuggle a person across this specific border is about 20,000 baht per head.

This massive difference in numbers suggests there is a larger, well-funded criminal network organizing these illegal trips. The driver might only get a small cut, while the main organizers take the big profits and avoid the real risks.

This recent bust highlights a growing issue in northern Thailand. Chiang Rai shares long borders with neighboring countries. This geography makes it a prime target for illegal border crossings. In recent months, immigration officials have worked hard to crack down on these hidden routes to stop the flow of illegal entry.

Officers are now spending more time gathering intelligence to stop the main organizers, not just the drivers. By tracking the money and the phone records, police hope to take down the entire network from the top. Furthermore, residents are encouraged to report any unusual nighttime activity to help keep their neighborhoods safe.

The three suspects are now in the secure custody of the Chiang Saen Police Station. Investigators will question them further to find the masterminds behind the operation. The police are determined to stop these illegal border crossings and bring the main organizers to justice before they can strike again.
