CHIANG RAI – Police are investigating after a young woman was found dead on abandoned housing development land in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai. Early findings suggest she may have been tricked into coming to the area before the attack.
At around 12:30 p.m. on March 28, 2026, investigators from Mae Sai Police Station in Chiang Rai received a report of a woman’s body found in a deserted housing site at Ban San Sai Mun, Village 6, Pong Pha Subdistrict, Mae Sai District. After the call came in, police, a doctor from Mae Sai Hospital, and rescue workers went to the scene.
The area is an abandoned land project with no homes or residents nearby. Most of the surrounding land is rice fields. When officers arrived, they found the body of a young woman lying on her side on a road inside the project. She was wearing a jacket and long black pants. Close to the body, officers found personal belongings, including a shoulder bag and some clothing.
In addition, police found a kitchen knife in the grass about 10 meters from where the body was discovered. Officers collected it as evidence. They also checked the bag and found an ID card, which they are still examining to confirm whether it belongs to the victim.
According to residents, the person who found the body was an elderly man from the area. He was riding his motorcycle past the site on his way to check his rice field. After noticing what looked like a person on the ground, he went closer and realized it was a dead body, then quickly contacted authorities.
The village head said no one in the community recognized the woman. He added that the land had been abandoned for around 3 to 4 years, and only a few locals used the route to travel to their farms.
Initial forensic findings show the victim had likely been dead for more than 10 hours. Police are still working to determine the exact cause of death and the motive. Right now, one of the main lines of inquiry is that the victim may have been lured to the location before the crime took place.
Police are now moving quickly to confirm the victim’s identity and gather more evidence. They also plan to track down the person responsible and take legal action.
