CHIANG RAI — Police and rescue teams have launched an active investigation after a local woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a forested area of Chiang Rai province. The grim discovery occurred on May 28, 2026. Local authorities are now working to piece together the final moments of the victim’s life.
The incident began in the afternoon when officers at the Mae Chan Police Station received an urgent notification from residents. A body had been spotted deep within the woods near Ban Pa Pao, a small village located in the Mae Kham sub-district of Mae Chan, Chiang Rai.
In response to the call, police dispatchers immediately contacted the Sangtham Rescue Foundation’s Mae Chan District Branch. A dedicated team of rescue volunteers quickly mobilized to access the remote forest location.
Because the cause of death was not immediately clear, local police requested specialized units to secure and evaluate the scene. The investigation team consisted of:
- Responding officers from the Mae Chan Police Station
- An on-duty forensic physician (medical examiner)
- Forensic investigators from the Thai Forensic Science Police
Forensic Evidence Found on Victim
Upon arriving at the scene, investigators located the body of a local woman. A preliminary physical examination conducted by the on-duty doctor revealed clear signs of physical trauma.
Medical examiners noted that the woman suffered significant lacerations. The most prominent wounds were located on her head and near the outer edge of her eyebrow.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether these injuries were caused by a physical assault, an accidental fall, or other external factors. Because the environment was isolated, investigators spent several hours documenting the area, searching for footprints, weapons, or any signs of a struggle.

The Sangtham Rescue Foundation team carefully transported the woman’s body out of the forest. The remains were sent directly to the Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital for a comprehensive autopsy.
“We are treating this case with extreme care,” a local official stated anonymously, as they were not authorized to speak to the media. “The autopsy report from Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital will provide the objective truth regarding how these head wounds were sustained.”
Police are currently interviewing residents of Ban Pa Pao and neighboring communities. They hope to establish the victim’s identity and determine when she was last seen alive. Authorities urge anyone with information about unusual activity in the Mae Kham sub-district over the past 48 hours to contact the Mae Chan Police Station immediately.
