CHIANG RAI – Yesterday afternoon, seven highway workers were injured when their six-wheel truck lost control and overturned on Phahonyothin Road in Chiang Rai, Thailand.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at approximately 4:15 PM, just before the Kiw Thap Yang police checkpoint in the Mae Chan district. According to local authorities, a sudden and heavy rainstorm caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle while braking, sending the truck crashing into the road’s center median.
The vehicle involved was a heavy yellow Isuzu truck registered to the Mae Sai Highway District. At the time of the crash, it was transporting 20 government workers in the back cargo area. The team was heading back to their local office after attending a traditional water-pouring ceremony, a cultural event held at the main provincial highway office in Chiang Rai city.
As reported by Thairath News, the driver of the truck, 49-year-old Sarawut Jaikad, managed to walk away from the accident without any physical injuries. He later spoke with investigators from the Mae Chan Police Station to explain what happened. He stated that a heavy downpour made the highway extremely slick and hard to navigate.
When he applied the brakes to safely slow down for the upcoming police security checkpoint, the large truck suddenly skidded. It quickly struck the center divider and forcefully flipped onto its left side, throwing the passengers onto the roadway.
Rapid Rescue Operations and Victim Status
Emergency rescue teams and local medics quickly arrived at the crash site to secure the area and help the victims. Thankfully, despite the violent nature of the rollover, there were no fatalities reported at the scene.
However, seven of the workers riding in the back suffered varying degrees of injury. First responders swiftly transported them to Mae Chan Hospital for urgent medical evaluation and care.
The injured individuals, who are all residents ranging in age from 23 to 57, include:
- Sarayut Pengdon, 43
- Saroj Chaichomphu, 41
- Warawut Charoongkomonmontri, 23
- Nopparat Thong-amphai, 33
- Jamnoon Wisetcharoentham, 47
- Charun Yodsujai, 49
- Ah-woei Chomue, 57
Currently, the injured patients are receiving the necessary medical attention, and hospital staff are closely monitoring their recovery progress. In the meantime, local police officers are thoroughly investigating the crash site to finalize their official report.
Authorities confirmed they will proceed with standard legal procedures once the investigation concludes and all witness statements are gathered.
This unfortunate event serves as a vital reminder for all motorists traveling through the beautiful but winding roads of northern Thailand. Sudden spring rainstorms can instantly turn familiar highways into dangerous hazards.
