CHIANG RAI – A routine security checkpoint in northern Thailand quickly turned into a high-stakes car chase this week, resulting in the seizure of millions of illegal drugs. The Pha Muang Task Force, a key military unit responsible for border security, successfully stopped a massive drug smuggling operation in Chiang Rai Province.
During the operation, officers seized a staggering 4,000,000 methamphetamine pills and arrested one suspect. This major bust highlights the ongoing battle against illegal drugs in the region.

The event unfolded when the 31st Ranger Regiment Task Force deployed soldiers to set up a roadblock. Their mission was clear: to prevent the transport of illegal drugs and enforce the Narcotics Code Act B.E. 2564 (2021).
The officers chose a strategic spot in the Mae Chan District, an area known for its proximity to border smuggling routes. While monitoring the traffic, the unit spotted a Toyota vehicle approaching the checkpoint. The driver was acting suspiciously, and the car was moving erratically, which immediately put the soldiers on high alert.
The High-Speed Pursuit
When the officers stepped forward and signaled for the Toyota to pull over, the driver panicked. Instead of slowing down, the suspect hit the gas pedal, attempting to break through the checkpoint and escape.
However, the military unit was fully prepared. The soldiers quickly jumped into their own vehicles and chased after the fleeing suspect. The high-speed pursuit did not last long. Because of their quick thinking and rapid response, the task force was able to cut off the Toyota and force it to a complete stop. The officers swiftly moved in and arrested the lone driver without further incident.
Once the area was secured, the authorities began a thorough search of the intercepted vehicle. It did not take long to find out why the driver was so desperate to get away.
Tucked inside the car, the soldiers discovered 17 large sacks made of colorful woven straw. When they opened the bags, they found they were packed to the brim with illegal drugs. In total, the authorities counted an incredible 4,000,000 methamphetamine pills. This massive haul of Category 1 narcotics is a major blow to the local drug trafficking networks operating in northern Thailand.
Official Response and Next Steps
Following the successful operation, military leaders quickly moved to inspect the evidence and inform the public. Major General Sathit Waiyanon, who serves as the Commander of the Pha Muang Task Force and the Director of its Anti-Narcotics Operations Center, ordered an immediate review of the seized drugs.
He assigned Colonel Thawat Inkong, the Deputy Commander of the Tak Task Force, to lead the inspection alongside other relevant law enforcement agencies. Shortly after the inspection, the military held a press briefing to share the details of the bust with the media. The press event took place at the headquarters of the 31st Ranger Regiment Task Force in the Mae Chan Subdistrict.
Now that the initial military operation is complete, the case is moving into the hands of local police. The suspect and all 4 million seized methamphetamine pills have been officially handed over to the Mae Chan Police Station. The police will now conduct a deeper investigation to track down the rest of the smuggling network and proceed with formal legal charges against the driver.
Through the quick actions of the Ranger Regiment, millions of dangerous pills have been kept off the streets, proving once again the importance of tight border security and alert law enforcement.
