PATTAYA – In a significant crackdown on illicit drug production, authorities in Chonburi have successfully dismantled a sophisticated, large-scale chemical laboratory in Pattaya. The raid targeted a group of Chinese nationals suspected of producing precursor chemicals for “Pot K,” a dangerous substance known to affect the nervous system.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of Thai law enforcement to tackle transnational crime and secure the region against the influx of illicit drug manufacturing.
The operation was led by the Governor of Chonburi, Narit Niramaiwong, alongside Pol. Maj. Gen. Pongpan Wongmanithes, the Chonburi Provincial Police Commander. Following intensive investigations, authorities targeted a pool villa in the area, which had been operating under the radar.
Local residents had previously raised concerns, reporting suspicious activities involving two Chinese men frequently seen mixing chemicals behind high walls. Acting on these tips, the Huay Yai police conducted thorough surveillance. Their findings eventually led to a court-approved search warrant for the property.
Inside the Laboratory: Evidence of Large-Scale Production
Upon breaching the villa, police uncovered a highly organized production site. The facility occupied about one rai of land and consisted of two two-story houses. The ground floor of the rear house served as a storage unit, containing over 80 items, including:
- 20-liter and 200-liter drums filled with unknown chemical substances.
- Sacks and black cardboard boxes containing precursor ingredients.
- Strong, irritating odors confirm the presence of hazardous chemical processes.
The second floor was fully converted into a high-tech laboratory. Investigators found specialized equipment, including glass jars, tubes, and three industrial chemical mixing machines operating side-by-side.
The investigation did not stop at the villa. Surveillance revealed that the suspects were also operating a warehouse approximately 20 kilometers away. During a subsequent search of this site, police seized additional large-scale equipment, including mixing tubes and scales, all in pristine condition and ready for use in chemical production.
According to the Thairath, two suspects, tasked with operating the mixing machines, were taken into custody during the initial raid.
This recent bust was not an isolated event. It is the result of a long-term investigation that began roughly two months ago following a similar raid in the Nong Pla Lai Subdistrict of Bang Lamung. During that initial operation, authorities seized a significant amount of chemicals suspected of being used in drug production.
The discovery at that time provided the “missing puzzle piece” that allowed investigators to trace the activities of this specific group.
Ongoing Prosecution and International Cooperation
Law enforcement agencies are now working in tandem to ensure a comprehensive prosecution. The ongoing effort involves:
- Regional Investigation Division 2: Providing technical support and case coordination.
- Narcotics Suppression Police: Managing the legal aspects regarding illegal drug precursors.
- Immigration Police: Verifying the legal status and backgrounds of the arrested Chinese nationals.
Authorities are currently analyzing the specific chemical compositions of the seized materials to understand exactly what was being produced. The governor has confirmed that they are actively tracking the source of these chemicals and the masterminds behind the entire operation.
This case serves as a stern warning that authorities are closely watching for signs of illicit chemical manufacturing. By acting on community tips and leveraging inter-agency cooperation, the police are actively dismantling the networks that threaten public safety in Pattaya and beyond.
