CHIANG RAI– In a highly unusual twist during a local drug bust, an accused methamphetamine dealer attempted a creative escape tactic: she claimed a ghost possessed her. The incident took place in the Mae Chan district of Chiang Rai province, where local authorities successfully arrested three suspects and seized illicit drugs despite the dramatic distraction.
The raid was spearheaded by a specialized local police investigative unit known as the “Night Wolves.” Acting on a reliable tip-off from community members, officers targeted a specific residence in Ban Dong Ma Tuen.
According to the original report from Channel 7 HD News, informants warned police that locals were secretly buying, selling, and consuming illegal drugs in a makeshift shack. To catch the group in the act, the police arranged an undercover operation to purchase drugs.
Chaos and “Supernatural” Tactics
When the Night Wolves finally rushed the premises, chaos instantly broke out. About four to five people, who were reportedly smoking meth together, scattered and ran off into the surrounding area. However, the primary target of the sting—a woman identified as Ms. Ah-mee of the Akha hill tribe—was left behind.
Realizing she was trapped, Ms. Ah-mee suddenly began shaking violently. When officers tried to question her, her relatives quickly stepped in. They told the confused police officers that Ms. Ah-mee was not resisting arrest, but was rather being possessed by a local spirit.
The suspect effectively used this “supernatural” state to avoid answering any questions, leaving the arresting officers frustrated.
To resolve the bizarre standoff, police had to call the local village headman to negotiate and calm the situation before they could formally make the arrest.
The Arrests and Drug Seizures
Despite the dramatic acting, the police stood their ground. They secured the scene and gathered the necessary evidence. During the raid, officers arrested three individuals and confiscated varying amounts of methamphetamine, locally known as “ya ba.”
The suspects taken into custody include:
- Ms. Ah-mee: Arrested at the scene with 118 methamphetamine pills.
- Mr. A-cha: Apprehended in possession of 35 methamphetamine pills.
- Mr. Lor-bae: Caught with 3 methamphetamine pills.
Following the intense raid and the help of the village leader, the “ghost” seemingly departed. All three suspects eventually confessed to the authorities. They openly admitted that the confiscated drugs belonged to them and that they were part of the illegal local drug trade.
The suspects have been taken to the local police station, where they face serious legal charges under Thailand’s strict narcotics laws. This strange case sheds light on the unpredictable daily challenges faced by law enforcement in Northern Thailand.
The region, located near the borders of neighboring countries, is historically part of the Golden Triangle and remains a major transit area for cheap, highly addictive stimulant drugs. Police officers often navigate not just dangerous criminals, but also complex cultural beliefs and desperate, on-the-spot acting from suspects trying to stay out of jail.
