The Nam Sai river that borders Mae Sai, Chiang Rai and Myanmar has overflowed again, causing the flooding “Sailom Joy Market” for the third time in the past few months.
Flooding also affected the Myanmar border town of Tachilek as flash floods created havoc in the middle of the night.
Continuous rain over the past few days once agian caused the water levels in the Sai River on the Thai-Myanmar border to rise and overflow its banks. The water overflowed onto the road under the bridge and shops in front of Saiom Joy Market.
Vendors scrambled to move their goods to escape the flood, thankfully no goods were damaged. However, some shops had to close and wait until the water receded before opening for business as usual.
In addition to the Sailom Joy Market flooding, houses along the banks were also affected, and the Mae Sai District Administration, Mae Sai Municipality, and related agencies placed sandbags to block important areas.
The areas affected by the floods were limited to low-lying areas along the river banks. Most areas, especially Phahonyothin Road, border checkpoints, communities, etc. in Mae Sai District, were not affected.
Heavy rain also caused trees along the road in Ban Huai Nam Rin, Wiang Pang Kham Subdistrict, Mae Sai District, to fall and block the road in the village, one sedan was crushed by a falling tree.
Meanwhile in neighboring Myanmar, Tachileik News Agency reported that on the night of August 13, flash floods flowed down from the mountains and flooded important communities near the Sai River.
The flash floods overflowed into the city and could not be drained into the main rivers quickly. As a result, the water overflowed onto the General Aung San Highway that passes through the city center.
Rescue workers and Myanmar officials had to help push and pull several cars that caught in the flooding. After several hours the water drained out and the situation returned to normal.
