(CTN News) – Alibaba, the prominent Chinese technology company, has recently made the decision to divest its quantum computing laboratory and team from its research division.
In a generous move, both the laboratory and the experimental equipment associated with it have been donated to Zhejiang University.
This announcement was made by a representative from Alibaba’s DAMO Academy, the company’s internal research initiative that encompassed the laboratory.
The spokesperson emphasized that the academy will persist in its dedication to technological research, striving to establish itself as a frontrunner in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) research.
Previously, an individual familiar with the situation had informed Reuters that the laboratory, along with its 30 staff members,
Constitutes a minor fraction of Alibaba’s comprehensive R&D team.
According to the insider, Zhejiang University intends to make efforts in hiring the impacted employees to contribute to its own quantum research endeavors.
Alibaba Group established DAMO Academy in 2017 with the aim of conducting research on cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Alibaba has recently undergone internal changes, with the closure of the lab being the most recent development. In March, the company announced its decision to divide its business into six units and separate its cloud division. However, this spin-off plan was abandoned earlier this month.
The newly appointed CEO, Eddie Wu, emphasized the importance of each business unit operating independently in the market. To achieve this, strategic reviews will be conducted to differentiate between the “core” and “non-core” businesses.
