Going to Cozumel? Here’s How to Spend Your Trip

Cozumel is a pretty well-known island in Mexico. It is a popular tourist attraction and is one of the largest inhabited islands in the country. The locals are friendly with tourists, and there are breathtaking beaches to visit and things to do like exploring national parks, swimming with animals, and diving.

With so much to do and explore, you have to plan carefully to make the most of your trip. While you can have some freedom for exploration and adventure, having an idea of where you are going to stay, where you want to eat, and some of the attractions you want to visit can save you a lot of money without wasting time.

Where to Stay

The first part of planning a vacation is to figure out where you are going to stay. When looking at hoteles en Cozumel, you aren’t without options. You can stay at a hotel and explore the island, or you can spend most of your time relaxing at all-inclusive resorts.

The island of Cozumel is large, over 184 square miles. However, much of the island isn’t developed. Research has shown that only about four to five percent of the island is developed, with the development all being in one area.

This means, it doesn’t matter what hotel or resort you choose, as everything is easily within walking distance. Some great options are The Landmark Resort of Cozumel, the InterContinental Presidente Cozumel, Melia Cozumel, and the Cozumel Palace.

Where to Eat

If you are staying in a resort, you may not have to worry about meals. But even those getting food included in their package might not want to miss out on authentic restaurants in the area. Since it is so tourist-heavy, finding delicious and authentic food can be hard, but there are plenty of tasty options to try.

No matter what your budget looks like, you can find someplace to eat. For example, a coffee shop like El Coffee Cozumel will hook you up with your caffeine requirements for the day, while offering delicious baked goods and a place to relax and take in the morning.

Most of the places for locals are cheaper, as they aren’t trying to bring in high-paying tourists. These are also places to find authentic food. Check out Los Tacotales, Casa Denis, La Cocay, and La Candela if you want something fresh and local.

What to Do

You may think with much of the island being natural and undeveloped that you will feel trapped on the island by the end of your vacation with nothing to do. That isn’t the case, however. Despite only having a bit of space, it is a lot crowded on the small island which can easily fill your days and leave you wanting to come back to finish exploring.

If you love the water, you, of course, can’t miss exploring the beaches. There are plenty of places to swim, surf, scuba, and snorkel. Depending on how crowded it is and what time of day you go, you can see fish, turtles, and dolphins playing and swimming around in the water.

If you are tired of the water and want something a little different, check out the Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park. While it still has options to spend time in the water, such as snorkeling tours, there are other adventures to explore as well. You can meet sea lions and crocodiles, or trek through some of the trails in the park to see more of the tropical island and the trees and other plants in the area.

There are also museums in the area that talk about the history of the island. For the Cozumel Island Museum, which has been around since the 1930s, even the building is a rich piece of history. If you like to learn by interaction, check out Pueblo del Maiz, which offers the history of the island before it was a part of Mexico, and shows you some of the dances, games, and foods that those living on the island participated in.

Make a Meaningful Pit Stop

When embarking on a trip to Cozumel, a delightful pit stop in Playa del Carmen is an absolute must. Located just a short ferry ride away, Playa del Carmen offers a perfect blend of pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and exciting activities. Whether relishing the warm Caribbean waters or exploring the fascinating Mayan ruins nearby, a brief detour to Playa del Carmen adds an extra layer of adventure and relaxation to any Cozumel-bound journey.

Stepping foot in Playa del Carmen while en route to Cozumel opens up a world of possibilities for unforgettable experiences, especially if you stay at one of the local premiere resorts, such as The Reef Resorts.

As one of the Riviera Maya’s premier destinations, this picturesque town beckons visitors with its alluring turquoise shores and a plethora of water activities, including snorkeling and scuba diving in the mesmerizing cenotes – all of which can be booked from the resort lobbies. For those seeking cultural immersion, the nearby Xcaret eco-archaeological park offers a captivating glimpse into Mexico’s history and biodiversity.
