Microsoft Partners With Mistral, OpenAI's French Competitor

(CTN News) – In a new partnership announced on Monday, Microsoft (MSFT.O) will provide artificial intelligence models developed by French startup Mistral AI through its Azure cloud computing platform as part of its new artificial intelligence offerings.

Microsoft is taking steps to offer a variety of AI models beyond its biggest bet in OpenAI as part of its efforts to attract more users for its Azure cloud services.

The multi-year deal signals Microsoft’s efforts to diversify its AI offerings.

It was announced today that Microsoft (MSFT.O) will acquire a minority stake in Mistral AI as part of the deal, the company confirmed to Reuters without disclosing any other details related to the deal.

With its Paris-based startup, OpenAI has developed a large language model (LLM) that is based on open source software and proprietary software to understand and generate text in a manner similar to what OpenAI pioneered with ChatGPT.

With the announcement of the partnership between Mistral and Azure, Mistral’s latest model, Mistral Large, will be available for the first time to Azure customers.

Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform will allow its customers to use several AI models from Mistral, a company which will also host its technology on Microsoft’s cloud computing platform in the future.

In addition to Mistral, in order to distribute its models, Amazon (AMZN.O) and Google have been working together as well. In the next few months, a spokesperson for the company said, Mistral Large will be available on other cloud platforms as well as its current platform.

As mentioned earlier, Timothée Lacroix and Guillaume Lample, who earlier worked for Meta’s artificial intelligence team, established the Paris-based company, which was founded by Arthur Mensch, who was a researcher at Google’s DeepMind (GOOGL.O), and previously worked for Meta’s artificial intelligence team.
